Avatar shouldn't be doing as well as it has.
I'm sort of hating James Cameron atm.

Okay, we've been over this a million times. The story is nothing new. It's been redone a thousand times. Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, Ferngully, blah blah...but it's a cool twist on a classic story. 99% of movies from Hollywood these days are the same recycled scripts. And don't blame James Cameron. He wanted to do it way differently, but the only way the studio would fund this movie is if they had a say in how it was made. So they turned it into the same crap that they put out every year.

The reason it's doing so well is because the world is so engrossing. The groundbreaking technology is incredible. It sucks you right into the movie. It is a good movie, despite the recycled plot/script.

How can you hate James Cameron? He has put out nothing but great movies.

Colin, he's a capitalist pig.
He sold his integrity for a box office figure.
Titanic was something fresh.

Avatar was just fancy effects.
Yes I liked it, but I'm not going to praise James Cameron for supposed genius.

Shame on you, a musician, who should understand better than most people what true creativity is.

He had special effects. Anyone could have done what he did. A great film maker is someone who can't be replaced because nobody can create what he or she creates.

Avatar was driven by special effects artists and James Cameron was just saying yes or no from his director's seat.

There's very little worthy of historic merit.

I don't care if you've been over this a thousand time. Go over it ten thousand times.

It's got Wow novelty factor like transformers. It's a mass produced piece of pop culture with little artistic credibility.

I think you're getting James Cameron confused with Michael Bay.

Avatar was written 2 years before pocahontas was released.

I've not seen the film, but it's very rare to see a film nowadays that has anything new and exciting, they usually contain similar plot elements that have been in films/books before.

This. I'd love to see some originality these days, rather than everyone thinking "Oh, that sort of film's popular, let's keep the storyline, change the charater names and settings and rip some more people off."

Yeah, Owen brings up a great point. James Cameron conceived Avatar 16 years ago, before Pocahontas came out a year later.

The avatar script has been written for 10+ years already. James cameron had to wait for technology to catch up to his brain. even then, he created his own 3d camera's.

Avatar was a -beautiful- film. And part of the reason is because Cameron didn't go out of his way to crack up some new and exciting twist.

Compare it to Sherlock Holmes: movies that are into shock-and-awe entertainment lose their ability to entertain after you've seen them once or twice because they undermine their own originality. But a movie like Avatar never gets old.

There'll certainly be people who don't enjoy it or find it engrossing, but for those who do it's a film you'll be able to watch again and again and again, and continue to enjoy it every time.

Why isn't that just as deserving as something in the this-is-new-and-never-seen-before category?

You can take any story and change the words around to make it sound like a rip-off. The same could be said for Avatar = The Matrix.

Meh, Avatar's success isn't about the plot.

Nor has been any american blockbuster's success about the plot since Star Wars.

And if you think about it, most movies boil down to: a man, a woman and a gun. As Stokenut said, the only thing a plot is, is rearranging those three elements in a way that sounds unfamiliar.

But not too unfamiliar, or else the viewers won't like your film.
