Reply is rather long, pardon me. But firstly, to the comments on "Cheapen" to "Cheaper", in the most layman way that I could explain, it is not allowed to play off words belonging to the same genre of meaning, which in this case the core meaning comes from the word "Cheap", regardless in what other form it is expressed. Unless it gives an entirely different meaning, it would not be counted. To the issue of "Poud" well Angus is right that it was played off during the broken links after "Grater" and therefore would not be counted in play. "Proud" is a good word. And on the idea of "Poud" being not a word as pointed by Tabs, can't say I disagree but nor can I agree, its included in a permitted dictionary but of a possibly dubious explanation, possibly not, since its not absolute it cannot be omitted unless Merriam is contested to be dropped entirely for the benefit of future games on justifiable grounds. Might be quite lame to some but there's only 2 solutions drop the dictionary entirely or accept what's listed with some understanding. Dictionaries contradicts one another at times, it happens unfortunately. And unto to Gorge's issue on "superlatives", actually you are right, where traditional grammar is concerned. This is something rather interesting IMO where words of use that relates to more figuratively as oppose to literally in meaning is not accepted, as cited since in a strictly literal sense, something cannot be more or less unique or empty to a greater or lesser degree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superlative). However, to deny the context of such words in use would mean denying the current application of the language found among the dictionaries accepted, although both Oxford and Cambridge does not contain the word, and also would mean drawing the line between for example a representation of everyday "street" language as oppose to one that is "tradition dictates", when both words, whether figurative or literal, even when offensive, do exists. We've tried with only Cambridge and Oxford before, to discover a very large extent of even common known words not accepted and came to the point of strict rigidity that failed. So, unless we change the rules to a new direction for future rounds if the game continues. This game is Lefty's with the winning word: Cheaper Amazing round though and very tight competition among a huge array of fantastic word locks, gratz Lefty! P.S. If there's other opinions to add on, especially disagree please do highlight, will be happy to review. Also, if anyone is interested to help chair the game, please do let me know otherwise if the games continues. -------------------- "I will listen to you, especially when we disagree." - Barack Obama ![]() |
