FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

I'm shitting a brick right now. My math teacher, I can't even call her a prof because she's not. She's a grad student teaching advance complex analysis. She's shit useless. She can't explain ANYTHING. Her notes are in a set pattern.

Some piece of shit theorem that means nothing to me because I can't understand the notation and the largely ambiguous words that go along with it.

Then comes some ridiculous proof that makes no sense or doesn't even seem relevant in some cases.

Finally comes some bogus example that is not realistic in terms of the sort of material that we would face....EVER!@

Repeat.

So she gives us these problem sets due every week. Started out making some sense, having no problems with them because it was still material taught by other previous professors. Now it's totally new bull shit material. Her problem sets are based off passed exam questions and she always "touches" on the material in class. Basically she mentions it once in class, doesn't give any insight on the matter and passes the subject of as if it is of no importance.

So, I'm fucked for these problem sets now. I realised this a while ago, that's why i've been going to her office hours to get some help from her on the problem sets. Someone will ask her a question AND SHE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION WITH ANOTHER FUCKING QUESTION. Either that or she finds some roundabout way of answering your question in a way that she doesn't even understand.

So obviously I know that she's of next to no help so I've also been going to the tutorials. The TA is generally pretty good. Shows us how to set things up and go about solving and thinking things through. This week, he doesn't show up to teach the tutorial. We're all fucked. We have no idea how to do any of these problems. So like 10 of us email this prof and say, look the TA didn't show up, we're all screwed, can you help us out with at least an extension?

NO.

Fucking bitch.

It's not like I absolutely can't deal with math. I'm in electrical engineering. Math is everything and everywhere in my courses. I just fucking hate this bitch ass whore who's teaching us.

FMYLIFE.

My rant.

Sounds like my math class last semester. Completely irrelevant equations and problems that have nothing to do with anything at ALL practical.

Nonsensical explanations were fun too (Our TA explained things by doing the proof for them, which 99.999% of the time, contained stuff we won't see for YEARS).

I know that feeling, normally I enjoy math and problem solving, but when it's not been explained well and I have to teach myself, well, i'd rather run my testicles through a paper shredder.

Hope everything works out for you.

I have ONE math professor and I take his classes religiously. Every time I deviate I've regretted it. hashdown.gif.png Think you can take it up with the department head or would they just blow you off?

This late in the term I really don't think I want to put the effort into doing something. Unfortunately we've already done the evaluations for the prof. I have some real choice words I'd love to put on one of those forms right now but unfortunately I have to keep it bottled up inside. The guys who took her class last year also hated everything about her since it was her first year teaching. She was even worse for them.

I found out a little while ago that she KNEW that the TA wasn't going to show up to the tutorial and we had a class with only 3 hours before that tutorial. That's bullshit.

I'd seriously pay someone (either the head of the department of the dean) a visit and explain what's going on and ask them to have someone come in and supervise a class (unannounced) because she's definitely not doing them any good the way she's going.

Please don't kill me for saying this, BUT...

I had a teacher like that. He'd always say the same thing, or say "I don't know." Highly fustrating, and it forced me to teach myself it. Then, once I started doing that, and paying a bit more attention in class, suddenly, it all made sense. And I got REALLY good at math.

Maybe she's trying to be like that.

And I can do X-varible calculus, where x is any number, because of that teacher. I learned how to teach myself, and so I taught myself multi-varible calculus.

George, if you're having tons and tons of trouble, copy the notes EXACTLY, scan them in, and send me a picture. I'll try to explain it to you in a clear, simple, format, and I will be able to do it. I won't do your homework for you, but I can help you. If I don't get it, my dad should be able to. Ph'd in physics, which is almost the same as one in math, and I have never, ever been able to stump him on a problem, no matter where I find it. No matter how tricky.

Ok?

So terrible teachers are the best teachers? laugh.gif That's how I get by in accounting, our entire department sucks atrociously so I just show up, read the book and take the tests. But with something like mathematics ... *cringes*

if u can learn from a terrible teacher u end up learning more by teaching urseslf, so yes bad teachers > good teachers. TAKE THAT LOGIC.

Olivier: Calculus is not that bad. Multi variable vector calculus in Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical coordinates really is not that difficult. You can sorta see what it is that you're doing. There are simple rules and whatnot that carry through all the way. Complex Analysis is like taking everything you have ever learned about math, throw it out the window and start from scratch. None of the rules are the same. Shit doesn't make sense and I've accepted it. I'm not sure the PhD level of physics but I know undergrad doesn't take this course. Maybe if you're doing quantum mechanics....I'll get through it though. I have plenty of friends that are pretty good with this sort of obscure math. I just need 18% on the final exam to pass the course biggrin.gif If everyone I know is totally stumped, I'll send you a PM.

Wayne: The further you get, the better the profs get....I hope. Seems to be the trend so far. Only like a third of my profs are shit useless. Welcome to my nightmare though.

Sam: By you're logic, if you OR together a good and a bad prof, you still come out with a good prof. If you AND together a good and a bad prof, you get a bad prof. If you took a class in logic, you would realize that you're logic is not logical at all. Philosophical, maybe. Logical, no.

It's pretty nice math, nice as in logical. There's alot of tricks to it though in terms of directions and whatnot. You need to know your cross products for sure if you're going to play with vectors.

Oh mai. Multivariable calculus is "counter-intuitive" and "pathological." I'M INTRIGUED!

My oh my, your right a bad teacher will ruin your day. My really bad day was in quantum mechanics and English was not the professors first, second or third language. I just remember say huh when she tried to explain s, p, d, f orbital. One saving grace though... picture if you will a 250 person lecture hall. Got the picture. The professor was on one of her "lectures," which I doubt people who didn't already understand the material understood, when the hero attacked. Twenty or so row up from the stage the Hero set off a Laugh box. If you do not know what a laugh box is it is a looped recording of someone laughing. At full volume, laughter echoed throughout the hall and the people were pleased...except the professor, she kept screaming for someone to turn it off. Lecture over. Best wishes on upper level math, my favorite was volumes of solids of revolution for the win. biggrin.gif
