If you did, at least admit it.

Let's have a friendly debate on which college is the best in America?

I wasn't too far off. I said the California Institute of Technology, and they're number three on that list.

You missed a big one. Julliard.

This man does make a good point. Where are all the music schools like Julliard, Berklee, New England Conservatory, etc...?

So the REAL list goes like this:

1. Any major school of music.
2. West Point
3. University of Michigan
4. Everything else.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
5. Ohio State University lulululul

Voted Princeton, but in all honesty, there's so many different things in colleges that people are looking for, that there really is no "best college in America", in my opinion. Theres tons and tons of great schools, but you can't really say which one is definitively the best college.

And then theres tons of biased, such as Gene leaning towards those schools great in music programs. No college can be spectacular at everything, as they simply don't have the resources.

Not to say that West Point isn't good, it may be one of the best schools. Its also up there in value, since its paid for by the military, but all lists of top colleges are different, because there are so many criteria used to evaluate them.

Poll fail tbh. Not voting on any of those.

And screw West Point, I ain't havin that. What Mango said ^^

The best college is the one that gives the best experience imo, it's not about marching to class and trying to be better than all your shaved head classmates. I like alcohol on campus, I think it's fabulous. Tulane serves beer on tap in one of their cafeterias. Ya know what? Students like that shit. West Point is probably filled with bigots and assholes, stay away from that.

West Point turns you into a productive member of society. It teaches you discipline, honor, respect, strength and integrity. They have the highest graduate rate in the nation. Oh, and btw...YOU DON'T PAY A CENT.

IMO, that is a better experience than getting drunk every other day, skipping class, getting STDs from skanks, and ultimately flunking out and having a huge debt to pay off for the rest of your life.

Now, I'm not putting down public universities...because I attended one. A pretty good one in fact. My whole family has attended them and most of my friends currently are.

But come on, anyone talking shit about West Point deserves a giant slap in the face for being so stupid.

biggrin.gif yeah its all about what you want to do for your career.

it amazes me how a lot of parents think that if their kids go to harvard (here at least) they succeed.

Now, I'm not putting down public universities...because I attended one. A pretty good one in fact. My whole family has attended them and most of my friends currently are.

But come on, anyone talking shit about West Point deserves a giant slap in the face for being so stupid.

First off, I know people from West Point, although I have never been myself, I'm sure it is a good place to get an education, but looking at it as another military school (although it may be the best) this is what I have.

Look, if money is an issue, and you're in to the whole military bit, you can join an ROTC group at any school and you get tons of benefits. In some cases, straight cash beyond scholarships and grants. But I don't know if I even agree with all the cash that the military is handing out for some of this stuff. Like let's not worry about the deficit and give these students a few grand for waking up early twice a week and going jogging with their unit. To be honest, people abuse the shit out of that system.

But if you don't have a cent to pay most public places will get you covered. Money should never be the reason to go to a military school (or to go/not go to any school in most cases, although it did keep me from going to SCAD).

I don't know anyone flunking out but I know plenty of people having shit tons of fun that they wouldn't be having at West Point.

I come from a very college-minded family. Both my parents are professors. I have two older brothers, one's a lawyer, the other did undergraduate and graduate schooling. Many of my friends have parents who are professors. I've lived on a college campus my whole life. I have been surrounded by college students my whole life. Colleges are very different. I live in a town with two colleges, one private, nice, and conceited, and the other is public, less-demanding, and greasy. I got to say, colleges differ, I've visited plenty of friends, I've stayed at plenty of colleges because we have so many good ones in Virginia. LA, Portland, NY, look not everything is the same. And just because West Point is seen as a good school, doesn't mean it is. FUCKING DUKE IS ON THAT POLL! Do you really know Duke? Does anyone here really know Duke? Duke is a shit legacy school that means nothing even though it has some good teams.

Don't conjure up an idea of a school because it has a name for itself. It's like saying Yale and Harvard are on the same level. Shit is a category mistake. Yale and Harvard are so two completely different things that to compare them is a fallacy. To compare West Point to anything else on that list is a Cartesian error in my book. Go to West Point if you want to be an officer in the military. For anything else, I would tell anyone to stay away and I'm sticking by that. My experience with friends that have gone to military schools, including the naval academy, is 0% good.

I could go on about this forever, I don't support a school with the mindset of the marines.

I went with Cal Tech as well. But that's just me. That's my interest, engineering. I wouldn't go to Harvard for engineering. I'd go there for law maybe.

Each College and University offers its own take on education. Each campus has its own take on lifestyle. But everyone has their own take on what is the best.

certainly i see gibble's view that its not the good/best because of its one mindset: the marines, and thats his opinion. i respect that

by the way, these are just colleges i picked off the top lists. doesnt mean anything.

Here is someone who knows what they're talking about.

Obviously this article isn't particularily applicable to me, since it reffers to universities/college's in the USA and not in New Zealand, but the mistakes the article makes are very relevant ohmy.gif

I Was foolish enough to go to one of New Zealands best universities, however their main course focus is Law & Commerce.... Adn I went there for Geography and Geology. Big mistake, and one that I regret greatly. I ended up hating it so much that I moved 600km to a university that focuses on engineering and Geology which is obviously much more suited.

My personal oppinion is stick to a university that is well respected, and suits your course rather than looking at something that has a high ranking.

This is what I try to tell everyone. You may not be able to go exactly where you want to, whether that be because of their standards or the tuition costs, but there are lots of good schools and if you don't try you won't get in. My high school doesn't produce many good students and the majority of each class goes to community college so I get mad when friends I have don't go to good schools or don't think that they could get in. I'm having a blast and I just want everyone else to have fun wub.gif

ive also heard things like Are asians smarter? on CNN, ridiculous.

but i think the way they select west point as the best college on the front page on yahoo is through statistics, from that, there is/that is only a probability

correct me please?

I haven't looked yet, but I put Penn State. Not just cause I live here, but by how their graduates get jobs easier. It is easier to go on like to law school if you graduate from them. They do a lot of experimental things for the environment too.

No way to decide on the best college overall, every single person is looking for something completely different.

I chose my university based on social opportunities and how nice of a city it was in.

My friend's mom got an invitation to work at Harvard as some kind of science professor so they actually moved to the US (from Sweden) a few months ago... sad.gif

I don't know anything more about any kind of school in the US though trout.gif
