So latley I've been having this urge to learn guitar, electric guitar that is. I'm going to do it, and with my Birthday and Christmas so close, both coming up, I am going to ask for a guitar and a amp.

My question is, what should I get.

Thing's I've been thinking about as far as guitar's:

Les Paul
ESP
Strat

These are by no means the only one's I want, If you have a great guitar or w/e, please, mention it here. So what should I get for a guitar?

As far as amps I haven't the slightest clue what makes them "Good" so I'll need some suggestions for that too.

Post away, please.

I play and I have both a Les Paul and a Strat, but I play my strat more than my LP. It really depends on the style of music you want to play. I'd get an ESP if I wanted to learn to play like Kirk in Metallica or something, but you really can't go wrong with a good strat or a good LP. I'd go with a non-signature Fender strat if you're starting out, and those are like $500, and Epiphone is made my Gibson, so its the cheap version of Gibson, so they make LPs at like maybe $450 or something? Not really sure on the prices, though... My whole set-up is probably worth around $3000 right now, but I have a SRV signature model strat and an awesome amp with like 5 pedals that cost around $500-$600 total? I serious guitar neko2.gif

As far as amps go, I'm a Marshall guy, and the one I use is relatively "cheap". A few years ago it was $500 retail and got it for $330-$350 at a pawn shop. My suggestion? Go find the cheapest thing you can find now that sounds relatively good to you (cheap strats are like $500 or so if they're american-made and they are a BITCH to re-string, but if you want a strat, I can try to make a video or something to show you how to re-string it... Either that or go to a guitar vendor like Guitar Center and ask them how to do it. They can do it, but you'd have to pay) and search for a decent amp. I'm sure you can get a cheap little crate amp or something for like $100 bucks or something, and it'd be fine for a beginner. Just remember to stick with playing it. You're not gonna become Hendrix in a day or something (hell, I've been playing for 4 years and only yesterday did my friend tell me I should enter in the Guitar Center's King of the Blues contest, lol), so just stick with it and you'll get better.

That was extremely helpful, thank's bro. Yeah in no way do I expect to become guitar god in a week. As far as prices go, I'm a bit wary about getting begginer stuff because as I become better and eventually "good" I don't want to have to buy a whole nother set up.

So I mayaswell get a nice set now, nothing like "OMG CRAZY EXPENSIVE" but something inbetween cheap and expensive, so a medium priced set I guess.

As far as the type of music goes I wasn't aware you had to buy certain guitars for certain sounds (yeah I am a guitar noob don't laugh XD) I was thinking you could tweak the sound using the amp or w/e.

Anymore info you could post is great. Thanks again man, lengthy, helpful post smile.gif

As far as guitars go, this is what I have:

Squier Strat (piece of shit, hate it, going to sell it I think)
Epiphone Les Paul Standard (absolutely love it)
Yamaha acoustic (my old faithful guitar)

It really does depend on what feels good in your hands. Personally, I also love the explorer but some people hate it but that's just me.

Your best bet is to go sit down in a guitar shop for an hour, ask questions, go home and do research into what other people think about the guitar and repeat.

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/electric-guitars

I'd never buy a guitar online but that site is useful for reviews.

As far as amps go, a tube amplifier is awesomeness in a box but kinda pricey especially if you're starting out.

I have a 15W Marshall and it sounds pretty damn good. Still happy with it after like 5 years.

I also have a 75W Line6 SpiderIII which is amazing for effects and stuff but it would be so much better if I could get it in a tube version.

Stay away from guitar "packages". They usually come with crap. Better off buying everything separately.

Its a combination of both really, but as you become better, you'll see what I mean by different guitars getting different styles of music. If you're into shred (Vai, Satch, etc.), then they use Ibanez, whose necks are thinner and their frets are lower, which makes it easier for them to sweep and play extremely fast. The satch model Ibanez is like $1000 and super lightweight too. You could also tweak your tone on your amp to get a more distorted sound if you wanted to cover up when you mess up or something (Nothing wrong with that, sloppy players do that), or you could get a completely clean tone for a real 20s or 30s Jazz sound (like real jazz, lol), but in order to do that, you have to know exactly what to play and when to play it, unlike Jimmy Page or someone who turns up distortion and then solos and has their tone cover up their mistakes (take Zeppelin I, for instance). Nothing against Jimmy Page, but he's a pretty sloppy player, but it isn't gonna stop me from loving him. wub.gif

Also, be sure to change your strings in the first couple of weeks when you get a new guitar. The ones that are on the shelves most likely have some really old, rusty strings that would make your fingers bleed and then you'd need a tetanus shot.[/Sarcasm]

Seriously though, be sure to change the strings in the first couple weeks of owning the guitar, then every month or so after that. (I don't do it as often as I should, admittedly) I'd suggest D'Addario or Ernie Ball because those are the types of strings I use most of the time and a lot of people like Ernie Ball. D'Addario tells you which string is which on the back of the packaging and even has them color coded at the bottom, so it would help you out if you're new to use those. I suggest 9s or 10s because they're the standard, but if you like the SRV tone or something like it, be a man and go with 12s, see if they hurt your fingers to bend, then come tell me.[/Sarcasm](again) hash.png

That's a good idea George, and Metal, I wouldn't know the first thing about changing strings haha, but that is good to know, thank you. You guys are great, just remember if you have anything to add post away.

So far I'm leaning towards a Les Paul as I am hearing great reviews from them, but not sure yet.

If you're going with a Les Paul, then I'd suggest going with an Epiphone. Although I dislike them compared to Gibson, they're basically the same company, but Epiphones are like the cheap knock-offs and I personally wouldn't spend $1000 on a guitar if I don't even know how to play it. Any idea towards what amp you think you want to get? Beyond that, make sure you get a few picks and keep them in your case or something (I have a pouch on my keychain that keeps all of my picks together for me), and get a monster cable. I absolutely love monsters and compared to anything else thats being used, I think they're the best, even if they're like $10. I also haven't been cable shopping in quite a while, since I don't have a need for them, lol.

Amp's I'm still rather clueless as I don't know anything about them. Like I said with the guitar, not sure yet. LP Isn't a definite or anything, just a option.

I'm going to do lot's of research before my final decision. Are gibson's the same type of guitar's as LP's (just better quality?)

Some of my favourite rock bands are:

Ozzy Osbourne
Jimmy Hendrix
David Bowie
Avengend sevenfold (Mainly synster)
Bang Camaro
Disturbed
Some Rush songs

If that helps anyone at all determine what Guitar/Amp would be a good choice, please say tongue.gif

I couldn't agree more, but if you're just starting out, then I wouldn't go out and buy a Gibson, lol...

Les Pauls are a body style, just like a flying V or an Explorer, Gibson is just the company that makes them. If it were me, I'd go with a strat just because I love my strat so much, but a Gibson Les Paul from like the 70s is a damn fine guitar (have one myself with mini-humbuckers, and if it didn't go out of tune so much, it'd be amazing).

As far as amps go again, I said it before, I'm a Marshall/Fender guy, but the only way to know is by going to the store and playing one that interests you. I personally don't like Line 6 because I dislike their effects, but hey, a lot of people like using them. Same would go with Vox, although I have a portable one that I use thats pretty awesome to use, and it has a bypass on the effects so I can always use that button to get rid of them. Again, its all your choice, so go in and try some out when you get a chance to.

Edit:

Umm... You got part of that right... Iommi played one, but Hendrix didn't. He played a very artistic Flying V but I've never seen him with an SG. You're probably thinking (GAG!) Angus Young, who used one all the time... Page used one too, but he also used a telecaster and an LP, the most famous of which being the LP. I also despise SG's with a passion. I played one that was from the Gibson Custom Shop thinking it would be awesome to play, but I was unfortunately wrong. It was so lightweight and strings kept coming from under my fingers mid improv solo, it was a huge disappointment. Then again, try one out if you want to, but I'd stay with an LP if you're going Gibson and a Strat if you're going Fender.

I can't give you too much advice on what guitar to buy, but if you're looking for a good investment in an amp that will fit whatever whim you have as far as your sound goes, get a Line 6. I use a Flextone III XL that's 150W and has tons of amp modeling features and effects to use. It's really fun to tinker with and suits a lot of needs as far as what style you want to play.

It's worth noting that you really don't need a lot of money or an insane amp to sound good, and you also shouldn't go overboard on expensive equipment before you know for sure you enjoy it. Grab some friends, I hope you have fun.

Good choice man.

I've been "learning" for like ever, but never got anywhere.

I have a Jackson electric guitar, not sure what model, but it's a $600-$900 guitar and I bought it for $75 off a bud, a long with his Vox amp for same price.

I love the sound of my jackson, mainly because if you wanna play metal or sickk sounding riffs, Jackson is great imo.

I'm gonna agree with what the other members said, use what you feel right with, finding a guitar is a personal thing, no one can do it for you.

Les Paul's are always awesome, I <3 Gibsons. I have a Gibson SG myself just cuz it's so light and easy to play, but I also have a Strat. With strat's tho it's kinda random whether or not it'll actually be good, cuz mine kinda sucks. >< FFS THO I LOVE MY SG

I bought a squire, after playing for over a year, done me well.

Probably best to make sure you'll stick to it before getting an expensive guitar.

Anyway, I think I've decided I'm getting an Ibanez, as for the model I'm not sure yet.

If I were going with a nice Ibanez, I'd go with a prestige or maybe a JS 1200. They're both pretty expensive though, and I don't know how to re-string a Floyd Rose... Good luck, though.
