one of my IST classes this semester is a JAVA programming class. We're using the program Eclipse to make stoof. Our big project, which is really the only assignment of the semester, is to make an application with a GUI that lets you sort feeds by categories, dates, number of hits, etc. Our idea is to have the gui show as like a web of bubbles(pic coming later) that interact with your mouse, meaning they float toward the mouse when you get near them, zoom in to the next layer of categories when you click them, glow on mouseover, etc. we've already got the basic understanding of how to make the whole RSS thing with sorting and all that work, but our biggest problem is implementing the GUI.

Does anyone have experience with JAVA guis that can help me figure out how to make images interact with the mouse in ways such as floating toward it when the mouse gets near, zooming(or appearing/disappearing) on click, and having lines(shown in the picture below) sort of anchored to other images and follow them as they move around? this must be perfect, and it must be epic. here's a concept diagram:

I want it pretty much to work like that, and then when you click on the actual bubble it will zoom in and center on it and the bubbles related to that will stay move around it as well, then any layers of bubbles above that will disappear off the screen and goto a list or something so you can get them back later.

ANY help at all with this would be greatly appreciated. its gonna be a big project and i need all i can get.

All human beings are capable of anything they put their minds to, so no.

Ok first of all, do you have to use Eclipse? I've used both Eclipse and NetBeans and I strongly prefer to use NetBeans for a Java IDE.

Not really much I can say about making GUI's in Java. I'm assuming you're using the IDE's built in GUI designer tool to generate the code for you? I've only made a GUI by hand and it's ALOT of code.

GUI's are tough to make. What seems logical and intuitive to you is usually not the same for others. If you want the high marks, you have to make it simple enough that someone can start using the program to its potential right away. Have your friends who aren't programmers pilot your GUI and use their feedback.

technology is allowed, using tools is what makes us human remember? but once we evolve a bit and gain control over atomic particles with our minds im sure flight and superpowers will come with time.

Meh true. I just wish people had started trying to evolve a few thousand years ago so we could fly now dry.gif
