You all said that TS had horrible voice quality. Fair enough, I understand. You all wanted Ventrillo, but its expensive. So, I think I found a solution:
Mumble.
Its a free, Open-Source voice-chat program.

I have tested it out with a few WG members, and they agree that it is at least Ventrillo quality. One even said that after installing and configuring it, Teamspeak sounded a lot better(It may very well have changed TS's codec configuration).

It has clients for Windows, Mac and Linux.

So, this Aussie Raid, we are going to test it.

Here is what you need to do:
(windows)
Download the Client here: 1.1.8 or 1.2.0 beta
Install it. If asked, select the "backwards compatible client".
Run Mumble. Upon startup, it will ask you if you wish to go through the audio wizard. You don't have to, but if you notice any sound problems, go run the wizard(via Configure menu). By default, Mumble has Voice-activation enabled, but Push-to-talk works fine.

Now join a server:
Click the Server menu, click Connect.
On the Custom Servers page, put in these settings:
Label: "Test servers"
Address: 'voice.freemumble.de'
Port: '65411'
Username: Your RS username
Password: Leave blank.

Now click Connect.

Join a channel:
Double-click on the "#8 PUBLIC" channel to join.

NOTE: This is just some random server I picked. We may have to change later, but for tonight's test, it should be fine.
And, if we like it, I can get our own unlimited server setup on our hosting, so no worries there.

-Robbie

What is the difference in price of servers in hosting TS and hosting this?

We're stealing some crazy German server right now. It's in beta, so I assume that it's free right now.

I do have to confirm Robbie's sentiments though. Voice Quality on Mumble>>>>TS.

Well, thats the benefit of Open-Source software. Its licensed under a BSD license, which to the best of my knowledge means that now only can they not charge money for it, they cant make a new version under a license where they can charge money. Essentially, it is free, and will always be free.

Unlike Teamspeak, we can host an Unlimited person server ourselves, and actually sell slots if we want(and not pay anyone for the privilege). With Teamspeak, we could host a 1000 person server, and NOT sell any slots.

Great program.
But I'm not wasting 2 hrs running around with 10 people in f2p just to test it.
Am I the only one bored of the same old pile-get dragged-regroup technique every f2p raid consists of?

I agree. I really don't notice any problems with the actual program.

A lot of people said they had trouble with hearing people correctly and whatever. The situation is really, really, really simple.

Settings >> Options >> Direct Sound Buffer size - and drag it all the way to the right

This makes the sound quality a hell of a lot better because more sound frequencies can be sent faster and clearer via your Mic and PC (I THINK).

Also, just have everyone turn up their mics so we can hear them easier.

I've used TS for 3 years in WG, and I've been using vent for the past 6 months. Trust me, its VERY helpful.

In the P2P fight we just had, it became really confusing when multiple people were trying to contribute info. At many times you couldnt understand anything at all.

A little off topic guys... How good is Mumble compared to Ventrillo or TS.

I want ratings in terms of:
1. Sound quality
2. Laggyness
3. Program features

Note:
a couple helpful things are to A, go through the audio wizard - its very useful. B, if you go to the audio menu, and uncheck "text to speech", that disables the annoying robo-voice.

- Much clearer than TS, id say 9/10, maybe 10
QUOTE

2. Laggyness
- didnt notice any lag from it at all.
QUOTE

3. Program features
- Havent had much time to check out all the features and all, but just from yesterday it seems TS has better features than mumble, but could be wrong.

Only problem is that literally no one but us has it so allied PKs might be troublesome. Other than that, everything is much clearer.

Eh, not hard to download and install. On the plus side though, most annoying spammers and noobs aren't going to take the time to download it and install, just to try to annoy us.

It was much clearer, but when I tried to get back on I had a hard time with that. It wasn't just a click and on like ts. I don't know I might have something that is interfering with it loading up. (It may be time for me to upgrade my pc or new one.)

You see this post people? THIS is what I want. Some information about "I tried it, and ran into a problem". Its impossible for me to fix things I have no clue about.

Rach, could you explain in further detail? If you need a screenshot to help you explain, go right ahead. This sounds like something I need to be aware of.

I've been through about 30 communities and syndicates in my time and have tried a range of VoIP's. I have RARELY heard of Mumble and from what I've heard from friends who use such software, it's nothing brilliant and they much prefer Skype or Vent.

I have no objection to switching to anything, but if you want to go through the hassle of it I reccomend Vent. It's got the sound quality and features of everything else but a lot of people will have previous experience with it.

By the way:

TBE - TS
TDM - TS
Sabres - Vent
ZT - TS

Compatibility, convenience, experience... is it really worth the switch to something like Mumble... for anyone?
