Hate bullshitting an essay. 4-5 pages on an ethical or moral issue we find especially important in today's world... did mine on the concept of the U.S. working from an assumed moral high ground in their international policy and how we try and imprint our own cultural values wherever we go, backed up by how radically different cultures instinctively fear each other since we can't immediately understand one another. If we all think alike then we have a handle on what's going on, but what's lost when we start acting like that? Anyway I like the essay and everything BUT I CAN'T FIND REFERENCES TO SAVE MY LIFE. Turned into a whole "this is totally out of my own head and I can't back it up" kind of deal and it's due this evening.

FML.

refferences...u can use external referrences such as capitalism and britain influence on india to specify a possible futuristic event in american imperialistic values. etc. etc. etc.

i always managed to compare contrast societies thru history and my hopes is that i grow old enough to teach history to younger generations. =D

Cite yourself and your education as a reference. As cheesy as it sounds, I would do that.

Do your teachers laugh, then fail you? neko2.gif

In all seriousness, I would recommend including references that are not necessarily related 100% to the essay you wrote. If it relates in any way/shape/form then include it whether it only backs up on sentence of text or not.

I know the last essay I wrote was pretty 'far out' and included allot of discussion of my idea's rather than what I got taught, and I got an A+ despite the fact that I had 5 references (of which 2 were diagrams and a little bit of text). As long as you have some they will be happy..... and in my case I referenced texts that they couldn't possibly have access to so they wouldn't know how little/much I was using them to base my essay on hash.png

Ended up doing a full-scale rewrite with nine textual references. Good stuff, it'll just be a few hours late since I had to read nine damn books last night. tongue.gif Finishing it up after I wake up a little bit more.

// edit //

Wow, the front page of today's New York Times is a perfect Coup de GrĂ¢ce.

// edit //

SUCCESS. Five solid pages not counting the cover page and reference list, and 11 references. Relief at last... shit I have a response paper due later today for another class. dface-ani.gif

Got a 98% on that paper. smile.gif Also just finished a ten-page essay on MMORPG cultures, not counting the cover page, abstract, or two pages of references. Then I finished a response on Enron. Now I have to study for a personal income tax exam tomorrow evening, and then work on a group submission on globalization due on Monday. And reread Kafka's Metamorphosis taking notes for Thursday.

WTB free time. tongue.gif

Fucking lol'd

On topic, if there still is one, at first referencing seems hard, but really, if you're referencing from other papers, you can then take aspects of said paper that they've referenced and reference from that and from that paper aspects that they've referenced etc etc until you have a huge chain/pyramid of references.

If I still had my dissertation handy I'd cite one of mine, but basically, I referenced an experiment by a couple of scientists, in this experiment they'd used a hypothetical value devised by a different experiment by different scientists, so I referenced this original experiment. I then took a closer look at the original experiment and it's results/discussion, and found some more interesting papers that I could apply and reference to my dissertation.

From experience I've found that there are two types of essay. There's the essay that you can use to pass college/university, ticking all the boxes of the syllabus. Or there's the essay that is scientifically/(whatever field you're studying-ally) valuable/applicable. Which ticks all the boxes of the syllabus, and goes beyond to be viable/useful to whatever area it is relevant to.

The second type is the one you're going to need to be able to create if you're looking at further qualifications such as a PhD or a Masters.

The first type of essay can be blagged easily by a few big words and a couple of references. The second type takes alot more effort, probably about 90% further extra curricular reading/research, 10% actual synthesis/writing but I found you could take significantly more pride in it.

Hope I helped.

Yeah, I've done that myself a few times. Not to such an extremity though. happy.gif What's cool is that, because I was talking about MMO cultures including my time in WG, I ended up citing Sam(urai-JM). Didn't get to ask him first though, hope he doesn't sue me! tongue.gif

I ended up just studying for both these papers at least 4-6 hours each, lol. happy.gif
And just as much time to write them out.

I especially liked the concepts of player/character/avatar identity, and interactive game violence and why it's not a bad thing. Those two were very fun/theoretical to work out.
