Ok, I'm back into the habit of video editing, and I was recently doing the video for WG/TS's raids on January 10th. I spent several hours working on it and rendering, then halfway through uploading I realised it wouldn't upload to HD. I took it off, re-edited it in 1280x720 (16:9), re-rendered it (File size went from ~500MBs to ~1.3GBs lol), and set it to re-upload while I went to college.

I come home, find it's uploaded, but the audio is completley muted because of the songs I used.

So, I've filed a dispute against Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment to get the audio back, on the grounds that it qualifies for fair use. The dispute is basically:

QUOTE
2.    This video uses copyrighted material in a manner that does not require approval of the copyright holder. It is a fair use under copyright law.
The use of copyrighted material is for non-profit use, has been obtained legally, and it's use in this work has diminuitive to no effect on the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

Statement of Good Faith
I have a good faith belief that the material was disabled as a result of a mistake or misidentification, and that I am not intentionally abusing this dispute process.

I am fucking sick of this. My old youtube accounts have over 100 videos in total, of which around 30 have been bombed with advertisements (Which I don't mind so much) or have had the audio muted because of these record companies. Already my first WG/TS raid video has had ads put up and my 100 combat video is blocked in some countries.

To be honest, it's fucking bullshit (Taking a leaf out of Lee's book here). The record companies are losing so much money off of illegal downloading and pirating that they've decided to attack minorities like YouTube videos. They're ripping the artists off enough already, and they fail at addressing piracy, but they don't have enough money to burn already so they try and save that small percentage of their losses by muting audio on videos that border on fair use and don't even condone copyright theft (Some of them even support buying the songs or albums and me and many others are happy to compromise with whatever solutions YouTube or the record companies may provide).

WE BUY THEIR MUSIC. WE ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. WE USE IT FOR NON-PROFIT AND ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES. And they go and remove it to piss us off so they can buy themselves a double cheeseburger at McDonalds.

I say thank you to companies like EMI who simply turn a blind eye to it because they recognise that we're doing good, and have little to no respect for Warner/Sony/Universal who go all legal on our asses because they value their money over their audience's enjoyment of what they do.

I'm awaiting a response from WMG and Sony now, and I will seriously fight them in court if I have to. This IMO is a violation of fair use law and I want what's not exactly completley legal, but what's right, from my point of view.

Also, slightly humourous side to things:

Pretty sure you can't use anything for public distribution that's longer than a 30 second sound clip. It sucks but there it is. Main reason I stopped messing around with AMVs was I could never share them for longer than a few hours before Youtube jumped down my throat.

Just say that you purchased the music, and that's it's copyright of whoever made it and you'll be fine.

They dumb.

I hear songs on videos that are old, and i've never heard. So i go buy them if i find out the song.

They probably don't realise it does more good than harm, cause most songs i wouldn't know without peoples youtube vids.

I like this rl rant.
