I'm sad to say and report that an Olympian died on the luge track at the Vancouver Olympics during a practice run. It always was a dangerous sport and this just proves it. My condolences go out to the 21 year old's family, community, and nation that he represented. It's really a sad and unfortunate event that I hope (as any one should) this does not happen again at the Olympics. This has already put a dim and sad taint on the Olympic torch ceremony.

Just in addition to this. I really recommend not trying to look for this video or pictures of the event. It's a horrible sight that you do not want to see. I regret that I even looked for the video out of human curiosity. It's just sad that people feel the urge (not excluding myself) to see this kind of thing. I wish we didn't have that urge.

RIP Nodar Kumaritashvili...

Challenge any creationist to a debate.
They'll run away and aggressively accuse you of "attacking" them and their "beliefs".
I'm sorry, please, keep teaching our kids that they'll burn in hell if they don't believe. Mutilate their genitals against their will while you're at it. Keep influencing politics and holding back vital scientific research.
I'll just keep my mouth shut to "respect" your "beliefs".

Kinda with Steve on this one. On a base level his death is equally as tragic as the death of the guy killed in a car accident somewhere last week. Representing a country in an event as dangerous as that is just another gamble in life. More people cheer you if you live, more people mourn you if you die.

It's not sad. Its curiosity, people are scared of what they don't understand.

The video is not bad whatsoever, but perhaps that is relative to the horrific things i have seen.

When you watch it, it looks like a small accident, but upon further inspection he hit the back of his head on a concrete pole, he died instantly and felt no pain.

He also died doing what he loved.

Embrace that urge, so that you may learn, and protect yourself. I guess it is a human instinct. In addition, you can see horrific things that happen on a daily basis, mostly at the hands of other human beings.
It makes you have a different outlook on life. Ignoring it is not a step in the right direction in making things better.

In that case if you died-- I'd struggle to give a damn. You sound psychopathic, you should get that checked. asshole.

And @ Keanu:

First off. Sad is an English word, so if you want I could find another synonym?: mournful, sorrowful, bittersweet. Happy?

Secondly, the reason that this death is tragic; 1) this happened just before the Olympics commenced, 2) this is an event that should be well monitored. Car crashes happen all the time, this sort of thing doesn't. That's why I find this to be important. Am I saying it's more important than a car crash? No. Maybe I didn't hear about the car crash last week. If you really want I can post every time somebody dies in a car crash?

LASTLY, to both Keanu and Stoke. Stop flaming this topic. If you don't have anything good to say then don't post. You should learn to have some respect.

wat.

I think you have a misinterpretation of flaming here. Stating our thoughts and beliefs on the topic in a neutral and respective manner isn't flaming, that's freedom of opinion. Calling steve a psychopath and an asshole? THAT's flaming tongue.gif

Depressive? So people having basic human characteristics like curiosity depresses you? Well I guess I'm right in saying having a lack of respect for other peoples' interests and opinions depresses me. Each to their own.

We both said our views. They might not be "good" to you but it doesn't mean we don't have the right to voice them. I have a huge amount of respect for what other people are, have and believe, even if I don't agree.

@ Keanu & Steve:

I can relate to both your arguments, and I can agree to a certain extent.

And, honestly, you're right, those weren't exactly flames... but they were still reckless and insensitive.
I do hope you're consciously choosing to be jerks, and aren't blissfully unaware that saying that you don't care about a person's death is inflammatory -- especially on a thread that is specifically dedicated in sympathy to that person's passing.

@ Sum:

I wouldn't exactly call it "sad", but I do understand what you mean.

The way I see it, when you give people "power" they will be inclined to exploit it. The internet and media hold power, in this case, so the moral standard can drop considerably; That's the paradox of progress. You should be used to it by now.

The urge you're referring to is actually pretty complex, as is the human nature that enables it. It has good and bad implications, and calling it "sad" is subjective, somewhat unfair, and potentially offensive. Just saying.

In the end, bickering like this is stupid, regardless of who's right.
And, I admit, my little contribution here makes me guilty too.

A man died.
I don't know him, but someone did... And knowing what it feels like to lose someone close, I respect his loved ones' mourning.

+1. And you can say the same for so many other things. It's rather... um... sad tongue.gif

Meh, ok I wouldn't go as far as to say I don't give a damn. He died at 21 so fair enough. But he died doing what he loved to do. Same way I wanna go out. And when I die, rather than have everyone be like 'BAWWWW EPIC TANK IS DED' I'd prefer a 'thanks for the contibution' and people get on with and enjoy THEIR lives. LOADS of people die daily. That's life. And when someone dies and people make a big deal about it, what's the best or most productive thing that I can do besides say 'sorry to hear that, RIP, my condolences'?

I get what you're saying Keanu. I was more offended with Steve's post and in addition you siding with him.

On a better note though. It is true that he died doing something he obviously loved (or else he wouldn't have been in the Olympics). I felt it was just something in my nature to post so that I and others could leave condolences. More of a memorial post than anything.
That's all.

I saw the video and it was pretty fucked up. I don't think they should have showed it on national television.

EDIT: What a way to go, going 88 miles per hour and the adrenaline pumping through you. Most likely didn't feel much pain if any. That's how I'd want to go out.

true story. I always have told my parents that I hope I die in my car going 120+mph having the time of my life. Honestly, its like one of the only times I feel like im truly free. Idk about this guy, but who knows, maybe he had the same feel for things.

Yeah exactly. Despite dying being somewhat lame; dying doing something you feel free and love doing is the best way to go.
