I'm planning on going to college within the next year or two, depending on my circumstances. I'm almost completely clueless on how things will work, so I've been doing some random research. During my search I always end up at the same question: What will your major be?

It's not really a question someone else can answer for me, so instead, I'd like to hear what you guys think. Those that haven't gone to college included.

What are your interests? In the future, what would you like to choose?
Or, What did you major in? What helped you decide which to choose?

I really appreciate any input.

Also... I have a lot of friends that have chosen Psychology as their majors. I've also heard a lot of other people say they've majored or intend on majoring in psychology. The thing is, I'm skeptical most of them have any genuine interest or appreciation for the study -- just the status of having studied it.

I'm not sure what to think of it. Has anyone else noticed something similar?

Psychology is like business, it's a versatile field if you're just looking for a job. If you're unsure about your interests talk to an advisor or try out their Exploration program (OSU's "major" for people who don't have a major). A lot of people switch majors at least once or twice during their college career.

you won't get it right the first time. the best thing to do is access your strength and weaknesses and have those become your driving force towards a career.

my ultimate goal is systems engineering
it all started with my ability to tear things apart and rebuild to suit. i'm also great at the analysis approach and very competitive when it comes to deadlines. my greatest asset is my intuition and although i lack creative imagination i stick more to the usability rather than fancy.

life is meant to be discovered so the best suggestion is to get motivated and involved and have fun =D

"Majored" in Applied Biology, changed to Zoology after 3 months.

I quoted Majored, because we don't do Majors and Minors, we just choose a subject for a degree.

I chose Biology because I'd always been interested in life/science, and it seemed like the logical thing, but the first three months sucked and i had more friends who studied Zoology so I switched. 2nd and 3rd years were shit, so all I really got out of University was that I DIDN'T want to go into a life sciences career.

However, while at Uni is when I got into fitness and discovered my passion for fitness instructing which I am currently studying to qualify as a Fitness Instructor.

Going to college/uni is as much about discovering what you DON'T want to do as it is about figuring what you DO. You might think now that say you're interested in Mathematics, but at college, this could be very significantly different to what you were expected or the aspect you're interested in, which I assume is why the allow such easy changes of course/Major.

Good luck deciding what you do want to do and like S Club 7 say reach for the stars!

Good point. I never really looked at it like that.

How much further have you gotten into Fitness Instructing, compared to your earlier courses in Zoology and Biology? Have your classes become more stimulating as you've progressed?

You've got an advantage over me there. tongue.gif
I'm not sure I could summarize my abilities quite like that yet.

How many majors did you consider before reaching that decision?

Btw, thanks for the advise, guys.
I'm getting more of an idea of what kind of stuff to expect.

the amount of majors i considered where intense. lets see

when i was 6, i wanted to be a cop,
8, i wanted to be a doctor and cure aids
10, i wanted to be a pilot and joined the military
13, skipped the military of el salvador and came to the u.s. to meet my mother (literaly gave up on my dream to become a pilot in exchange to meet the one i love)
15, IT technitian (was really great at troubleshooting computers)
17, rocket scientist/engineer (my affinity of flight and logical approach gave me this idea)
18, computer science. (i wanted to know more about computing: started general studies in a community college)

19-20 (currently working on my general studies and once completed i'll go ahead and become a computer engineer then a systems engineer)

i think that for the past 20 years i've been lost because i had great motivation but no path to get there. each path though led me to more opportunities that broadened my vision and now that i know that once i finish college i won't have a job in my career i feel more excited to go at it. my teacher and mentor has truly been a guiding force who has helped me thru challenges and continues to be an inspiration.

in an essence, what i want in life as a career is a compilation of dreams i've had in my past, my present experience, and the help of people whom i've surrounded myself with that are where i want to be. i don't know what the future holds but i do know that my father is caring me and with that conviction and strength of heart i'll be happy just having been able to give myself what i've yearned for since i was 4. a life that is truly my own. one i can share with everyone and one that will inspire others dreams like a spark.

but yeah, the current outlook for system engineers are unemployed. and for pilots its much worse due to they having lost their pension and salaries are greatly reduced. =S

lastly, the question you truly need to ask yourself is...what do you truly want? what is it that you deserve for yourself and has it ever been accomplished before and by whom. these are questions that must be addressed in order to attain a clearer understanding in your mind. after all you hold the answer because you alone have the potential to achieve everything and anything. all you need is a heart to guide you and a mind open to learn it.

I did. woeh.gif

So far at least, one year left until I graduate. I went with accounting because, 1) I don't mind menial mind tasks that operate in a very delineated environment -- and actually accounting is pretty damn interesting if you're inclined towards it, and 2) it can get me into federal law enforcement if I feel like it down the road. So like, I could get into the FBI hypothetically, but I don't have to: one major covers both my priority and cop-out scenarios. biggrin.gif

Talking to people in fields that interest you really helps; I got to sit down with two FBI agents at different times during high school and talk about what majors they really like to conscript. I just wish this campus had mathematics and English majors as well, I'd tackle all three with glee.

While my Zoology studies were at the degree level, my Fitness Instructing course is at the level equivalent to studies at age 16, but the qualification I will receive is the minimum qualification needed to be certified to work in a gym. And after this qualification I can study Advanced Fitness Instruction, and then Personal Training qualifications, but that would be alongside/during my career as opposed to studying everything first, then getting a career.

As for the classes, since this is equivalent to a GCSE in the UK, (Age 16 qualification) the actual theory content of the course is quite simple, and contains some rather dumbed down elements of my degree studies. The practical elements are amazing, including exposure to various forms of exercise I would never normally do, Boxercise being a prime example.

I am getting a bachelors degree in Game and Simulation Programming. I have always loved programming, which is what mostly influenced my decision... Currently 1 year left until graduation, and I'm loving it.

Music. Taking the risk.

Or, What did you major in? What helped you decide which to choose?

I'm doing a Btec National Diploma in IT in collage atm, although our collage in England is like the equivalent of high school in the US. I don't plan on going to uni so I guess my input is useless here tongue.gif

I'm going to choose Mathematics (Just Maths) as my course in Uni as I love the subject, I love the problem solving part about it and I find it very intellectual. After that I guess I'll learn some Economics & stuff and go into Actuarial science and be an Actuarial consultant (yes, I don't care whether it's a boring job, I'm in it for the money).

College means Uni right?
College in the UK could mean the sixth form which is 2 years of your life that determine what University you get into (Which is where you get your Bachelors/Masters/Ph.D).

I am personally looking at being a doctor. I really love helping people and the money is encouraging. While the college work and stuff will be a pain in the ass, it will satisfy my commitment to helping people.

After my 4 undergraduate years, getting a basic degree, I will apply to medical schools and then work from there, possibly specializing what I want to do towards brain surgery (something that really interests me).

@Abs -- College and University are kinda the same in the US.

You go through 12 years of basic schooling and then you go to college. Many of the schools are called "such and such University" but we group it all by saying college.

In college you get your different degrees and focus your studies to a point that you want to study.

Me personally?

Well, I've wanted to be a doctor since I was 6. As I went through school, I developed an interest in the circulatory system and in particular the heart. I'd like to be a Heart Surgeon/Vascular Surgeon.

What am I majoring in?

Economics.

Why the completely unrelated topics?

In most cases your major has absolutely nothing to do with what you can go on to do later. Medical Schools do not require a "Pre-Med" major, or any sort of science major. They just have a list of classes you must take and pass (and obviously do well in). Besides that (and the MCAT), it's extra curricular activities, such as internships and volunteer work that determine acceptance.

My dad went on to get a Law degree (obviously after undergraduate study, but just making sure everything is clear) after doing a generic "Social Sciences" major at UCLA.

In any case, why Economics?

I liked it. I took AP Economics in 10th grade and loved the content. I like knowing how things work, how people work and make decisions. It's just such an interesting topic.

Granted, your major is also dictated by what you want to to do later, and that is obviously up to you to decide. Some further studies DO require particular majors - my roommate wants to become an astronaut and they apparently require an engineering degree.

Like Owen said, college/university is all about finding out who you are. That include what you like and what you don't like.

I initially was accepted at UC Davis under the major "Computer Engineering," which initially didn't bother me since I love working with computers. Upon realizing that this was more programming than actual tinkering with machines, I quickly switched out and into Economics (which I had listed as my primary major and WASN'T accepted under - go figure). People change their majors far more than you'd expect.

Many colleges have an "undefined" "major" for people who really just aren't sure. When my dad went to college, he chose his major based on what topic he could stomach the most of, which ended up being Social Sciences. He didn't want to become so fixated on one topic, but rather take in everything he could.

There is generally also the option to make your own major.

Don't put so much pressure on yourself when it comes to choosing your major. It's not as important as people make it out to be. The key is, when you DO choose, make sure it's something you WANT to do. Not something easy, or something that is mildly interesting. You'll be spending a lot of time doing work in that topic so it needs to be something you want to do.

Hey Firelion. Long time no see. It's funny that I came across this thread. It just so happens that I'm currently going back to college to get my degree right now.

I chose Forensic Investigation as my major. It's something I've wanted to for a long time. The more I hear about the horror stories, the more I want to do something about them. I'm still undecided as far as which area I'd like to focus on. It'll either be Criminal Forensics or Computer Forensics. Both are very rewarding and are solid fields to get into right now...especially with the boom of Court TV, A&E, and CSI.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll do just fine. Nobody said you have to pick a major now. You could always take general studies and decide later.

Best of luck to you.

I'm in my second year and I'm going to double major with Computer Science and Philosophy. Hopefully. I don't know if I can do both and graduate in four years because I kind of got a late start on CS, originally I wasn't sure if I wanted to major in Computer Science or Media Studies and I had a hard time getting in to some CS classes as well. Basically, I need 42 CS credits in all (only 30 for Philosophy) and I will only have 19 after this semester, so I will have to focus more on those. But that's not important stuff.

Most people at my university don't decide until they've been in school for a year, I like colleges that don't let people come in to it with a declared major (that's what mine does, you have to wait and declare it, which forces you to think about it).

Psychology man. I'm in a Psych class now. Participated in a study today. My girlfriend is a Psych major. Friend's dad is a Psych professor. I can tell you anything you need to know bout Psych. A LOT of people become Psych majors at my school. It's very popular here. I like it but it's not as interesting as it seems on the surface. It requires performing a lot of experiments. Also involves learning statistics for Psychology and writing articles in APA format. A lot of upper-level Psych classes involve performing experiments and reporting on them, that is using statistics to analyze your data, make graphs, write a little paper on it, etc.

Kinda doing a similar thing to ranma i did the same course keanus doing and decided that i had a knack for programming i was just good at it and it came naturally to me hasnt taken me much time at all in progressing on with my programming skills. Im doing Computer science and games programming currently in my first year and its going well biggrin.gif

But yeah to be honest what every1 else has said is true we have had so many people switch onto other degrees or just drop out because its not for them. Its as much finding out about what you dont want to do aswell as what you do want to do. I guess i was just lucky and found out what i wanted to do before coming to uni smile.gif

"Uni" isn't separated from college in the United States. I guess you could say it is graduate school where those that get their basic degrees, such as in law or medicine go into a specific school for their field.

In America when people say they're going to college, they mean they're going to university.

At the same time, Keanu if you wanted to compare your "Uni" to something over here, it might be graduate study, which also yields a degree.

It would be like going to college (American) and then going onto medical school, or law school I suppose.

But really over here college is the same as university.

In the U.S. we have junior colleges also. You go into them to get the pre req's for a 4 year college or some other stuff. I don't know much about it.
