I've been reading quite a bit of fantasy recently, and I figured it'd be interesting for us to put together a pretty comprehensive list of what books/series we've read and would recommend to others. I figured the Guest Forum would be the best place since it's just that awesome. dface-ani.gif

To get definitions out of the way, "high fantasy" at its most basic involves OTHER WORLDS. This rules out Twilight, Harry Potter, and the Dresden Files, but includes books like Glen Cook's Chronicles of the Black Company even though it lacks intelligent non-human creatures (ignoring the denizens of the Plains of Fear, anyway).

There might be some defensible exceptions to the rule (the Abhorsen Chronicles are on the fence, as are the Chronicles of Narnia), but this thread is a HIGH FANTASY THREAD. If you want to talk about other stuff make your own topic, goddammit. neko2.gif

PS: Feel free to talk and debate and stuff, the compendium is in the second post. If you want to write a synopsis/testimonial feel free to do so and I'll include it, but it's not absolutely necessary. All you really need is to give me a title and say THIS BOOK IS AWESOME and it'll go on the list (authors and publication dates are also super cool).

The High Fantasy Compendium:

Books/series are assorted alphabetically by title.
If you're looking for a specific author, use your browser's search function.

Sub-genres noted:
  • Dark Fantasy: involves horror and/or considerable realism/brutality.
Tons of main character fatalities does not directly imply dark fantasy, but it's a clue.

Reiksguard is based on Warhammer somehow or other; I'm not sure how since I have no actual knowledge of that system but just suffice to say the book is bloody brilliant and you should go read it right now. It captures perfectly that highlight of medieval knighthood of the 16th century with all its glamor and debauchery, and blood-chilling heavy cavalry charges.

Very well written, I'll be following this author with keen interest.

I be shocked that Dragonlance have ended for ye on just those 3 books.

Continue on, it gets more and more epic.

Dragonlance Chronicles, The (Series):
Author(s): Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Sub-genre(s): N/A.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight (1984).
Dragons of Winter Night (1985).
Dragons of Spring Dawning (1985).

Did ye read just those? Read these next in the following order:

Dragonlance Legends trilogy:

Time of the Twins
seabattle of the Twins
blast of the Twins

Then,

The Second Generation

Dragons of Summer Flame

The seabattle of Souls trilogy:
Dragons of Fallen Sun
Dragons of a Lost Star
Dragons of a Vanquished Moon

Also, theres a trilogy that goes indepth of the missing pieces of the original Chronicles trilogy:

The Lost Chronicles Trilogy:
Dragons of the Dwarven Depths
Dragons of the Highlord Skies
Dragons of the Hourglass Mage

All by same authors

Out of everything I've read, the series that caught my attention the most was:

Symphony of Ages, The (Series)

Author(s): Elizabeth Haydon

1. Rhapsody: Child of Blood
2. Prophecy: Child of Earth
3. Destiny: Child of the Sky
4. Requiem for the Sun
5. Elegy for a Lost Star
6. The Assassin King

It's more adult-oriented fantasy series. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_of_Ages

"The Giver" by Lois Lowry
"Marlfox" by Brian Jacques
... Or any other book from the "Redwall" series by Brian Jacques.

For "The Giver" there's no way for me to give it proper justice without spoiling everything, but it was, in my opinion, an amazing story. The world is mysterious, at first, but you gradually begin to understand it... and things start to make surprising sense. It's one of those books that twists the general perception of life.

The "Redwall" series tells the stories of numerous animal warriors, their battles and their lives. I got really into "Marlfox" because it revolves around a group of warriors rallied together after a band of assassin-like fox's terrorize the land. Armies are formed and a war is started. Pretty classic stuff; always thought it could make an epic movie.

I read the giver in like 7th grade and hated it, I actually think I may reread it though because, now that I think about it, it was a pretty weird book and I might get something out of it this time around......

+redwall series=the shit
