So I want to buy a decent desktop computer. I want to buy it new, maybe $500-850 range, and I want it to last me awhile. The only significant specialized use I'd like is for it to handle World of Warcraft very well, anything else I do on it would be generally basic (microsoft office stuff, internet surfing, etc.). A guy I work with recommended Dell or HP desktops, but when I go to their websites they've got BAJILLIONS OF THEM OH MY GOD.

Could anyone tell me what I should be looking for specifically so I don't waste a few hundred bucks off something a salesperson tells me I should be buying? Thanks in advance. wub.gif

Awesome, tyvm Mocha. happy.gif This is exactly what I was looking for.

Tbh, the most I've ever done close to this is put in some RAM. Is actually putting my own computer together something I could reasonably do given the instructions/web resources available, or should I find someone to give me a hand with it? If this is answered in the FAQs on the website that I haven't had time to crack into before leaving work right now then just ignore this.

Thanks again!

// edit //

Nevermind, they have a whole section for first-timers. Awesome.

Go to www.ncix.com. Use their forums. The guys there know their stuff extremely well. They can give you a set-up for your price range and also walk you through everything. I ordered my parts to build my PC that I got about 3 years ago from there and it's still an above average PC and I paid maybe $1500.

You definitely save money buying the parts and building it yourself.

Several components on the list...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001V5J7YI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827135204
... according to the customer reviews, do not come with all the components you need:
QUOTE
As M. Mola points out, this is an OEM package. It not only has no instructions or software, it also does not have a connector cable, an IDE four-pin to SATA power adapter, or mounting screws.
QUOTE
No included SATA cable.
This is Greek to me. Do I just go out and buy the SATA cables/adapters or are there different ones for different needs and I'll have to make sure I get the exact correct one? And if so how do I find it? Or are these things superfluous connectors that I won't need for what I'm doing (doesn't sound like it)?

// edit //

And a quick question on the case...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811129066
QUOTE
Wire for the front audio jack is unshielded and can pick up interference from the internal components, causing slight static. This can be remedied by routing the wire away from "noisy" components and/or shielding it yourself.
Electrical tape? And what constitutes a "noisy" component?

The rest looks straight-forward; I'd like to start ordering this week.

noise would be cd rom, hard drive, and any fans

satacables you can buy in most computer stores

edit: you can always swap out oem versions for real ones, it will cost a bit more but it should make it more beginner friendly

That is correct Wayne.

OEM basically means it only comes with the hardware and not any of the extra parts. It usually is cheaper for some people to get the OEM version because they do not need the instructions. The retail version is what you would find in the store to buy. It has instructions and cables to use to hook it up. Make sure you read whether an item is an OEM or retail version because you will have to buy cables for the parts if it is an OEM. Most of the time, drives (hard drives and optical drives) will be your OEM products.

Building a computer is like putting together a puzzle. Do some research on what each part is responsible for and how it connects. When I built mine, with the help of Robbie and the instruction manual that came with my motherboard, it was a 2 hour father-son bonding time. The internet also has some great resources. I will try to find a few after I get this post off and you come up with more questions.

I spent roughly $800-$900 (plus or minus some MIR and some other stuff) on my computer. Robbie gave me the build and I trusted what he had to say with it. Most of my parts are on the top end of the line, so I know for sure that they will last for quite a few years. I would say go ahead and be willing to spend the top end of your budget and get a computer that will last you.

Also, I personally prefer Newegg for my electronic purchases. On computer parts they run different deals all of the time, along with having regularly low prices in general. They also feature 3-day shipping as their main shipping, which is always nice to have. Hell, depending on where it ships out from, I have had it come in the next day.

EDIT: About the cables.... SATA and IDE are two different cables. IDE are the ribbons that you may find when digging into an old computer. They are wide and super flat, and also out of date. My motherboard has room for 1 IDE cable, but most things do not use IDE these days. SATA is what most things connect with now. It is a regular sized wire that has a rectangular shaped connection. They have different levels of SATA cables based on speed. SATA II is pretty much the universal one right now though. When you buy any cable, make sure that it is definitely long enough. A little extra length can't hurt.

Will do; I also had a brilliant flash of insight and realized I kind of need a monitor to go along with the computer. Anything I should know about that or just go out and buy one at random? And speakers. And a keyboard. And a mouse. biggrin.gif

// edit //

Was looking at this monitor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824236072
...or this one:

I absolutely love my 2 Samsung monitors. Pick your brand and then pick your size and price. Should be pretty easy for the monitor.

Speakers? I currently am using Logitech X-540s. I got them for $75 off of Amazon. 5.1 speakers that sound pretty good and were kinda cheap.

Keyboard and mouse are your preference. I really like backlights on the keys of my keyboard, and I am used to Logitech's hyper-scroll scroll wheel so that helped me pick my mouse.

Why? Because of the aspect ratio or just because they're less awesome then +24"? happy.gif

I had a $25 gift card and figured I could at least pick up a cheap mouse and keyboard.

Gave up and went back to NewEgg; found everything I needed in a few minutes.

Back to looking at monitors. wub.gif

Maybe I'll buy a BlueRay with the gift card or something.

Everything's up and running; powers up fine, just waiting for the monitor and whatnot to catch up (hopefully today if not then on Monday) so I can hook everything up and actually see what's going on. But so far so good.

Sounds awesome. smile.gif And thank you so much for all the help; computer is up and running, everything's working great, and (OMG) internet got hooked up LITERALLY while I was getting everything up and running, so as soon as it was good to go I'm online. This rocks. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

// edit //

The one thing is the monitor is supposed to be 1680x1050 or whatnot, but there's no option for that in the display settings. I need to update something somewhere maybe?
