Yea, you've all seen some changes recently.
I'm working on stuff.

One:
Improving the code of the news-box. When I am done, things will be better arranged, and done such that if you have Javascript off, its still usable(at least, the default tab). Good for mobile devices or "secure" browsing.

Take a look at the PM a WG Official link. It pops up a nice little javascript box(Not complete in the least), which will have all the links to PM people. The Search link will do the same thing, and probably the war/raid alert also.

Two:
I'm trying to adapt the forum to work better with different sized screens. The old fixed-width didn't work for 800X600/480, and on anything above 1024X768 it wasn't so nice.
Now, I'm making it scale so that it looks decent on large screens, but also scales down to work on 800X600(and mobile-device screens, typically 800X480).
My problem here is the banner, which doesn't scale well.
Any suggestions?

Thanks Robbie.
I like the new look and layout of the box, the pm an official/search thing etc.

Not enjoying the scaled up forums atm, that's the thing that I thought looked best about our forums, that they were slick and you could view a lot of them at once.
Not liking that sad.gif

After much trolling of the forums, I am becoming indifferent to the scaled forums changes, so if it works better for some users, then good.
I'm sure we'll all get used to it.

P.S - Robbie, there appears to be a problem with the stats lookup for each person - it's not incorporating hp/constitution or something? While you're fixing things... biggrin.gif

It is looking up your stats based on your username and not your RS name. That is why. It works for Ubg.

I was surprised at the scaled forums. I am somewhat indifferent about it as long as we can get the banners to be scaled.

People must remember: If the banner is scaled, it is going to change the look to it because it will not keep the aspect ratio, unless it is made to get taller along with wider. It is kind of a hard situation to decide whether to go with the large banners or the smaller banners, because one size will lose.

How about the banners like on zybez.net?
If they were made like that it would scale down or increase depending on the size you are trying to use.

I don't think changing the banner size will do us any good at all. As Nick said, there will always be a problem with scaling, and since some of our banners (the pixelated skills olympics ones for example) are so precise and so detailed and delicate, they will just look shocking when scaled up/down...

However, it cannot stay as it currently is.

I'm wondering, is there any way we can fill that space? I don't know what with though. Some sort of.... I want to say forum border or... pattern, design... just thinking out loud here really.

To be honest, I really don't like the stretched forums frown.gif

I always liked WG's forums previously because its very easy to read on the old fixed width format.

Meh; all the other forums I visit(Like Zybez), use a much wider format; remember, if you want a narrow format, you can simply shrink your browser window down a bit.

That being said, I've compromised: The max width is a little wider than it originally was(it only scales from 800-1100px), but still allows for scaling down.

I've also made the banner scale to match(yes, same aspect ratio), and while it doesn't look -perfect-, its decent at least.
I've also instituted a maximum image-width of 600px in posts; hopefully this will stop large screenshots etc. from stretching the forum and making it hard to read.
(If you have a large image, post it with a link to the image so people can click to view the full-size image).

Wonderful, many thanks.
We just need to ensure that all banners from now on are made with the new sizes, yeah it doesn't matter if they are made with the old sizes, but they will look better if they don't have to be scaled up biggrin.gif

Robbie - do you have time to do the Event Times tab before you fly out? x

Robbie,

What if a banner made at full-size could scale down instead.. Wouldn't it be a better result?

I'm liking the changes so far.

Just out of curiosity, what browsers are our forums made to work best with?

I'm assuming FireFox. What about Chrome or Safari?

It won't hurt; I'm using CSS to scale it, so its using whatever method your browser wants to make the width fill up the space. On IE6, it may look odd either way, as its using nearest-neighbor scaling.

I try to code with standards-compliant code, and I won't add in any hacks for IE6.
I have added some CSS3 codes that are only supported by Mozilla-based and Webkit-based browsers, but thats all visual "chrome".

I test with Firefox 3.6.5pre x64 on Linux currently.
