Before I start, let me just tell you that I'm in no way, shape or form a pk'er. I don't know how to pk, and I've never killed anyone in 1v1 pk'ing. However, I understand that pk'ing is fun and can lead to great rewards and riches.

My stats are not really fit for solo pk'ing, from what I understand; most pk'ers have at least one of their combat skills (whichever one they specialize in) leveled to the high 90s or maybe even 99. I do also understand that levels don't need to matter sometimes, that it's usually about timing. I don't have any combat skills leveled to the high 90s or 99, but I would like to know of ways I can better myself using what skills and levels I do have, along with better timing and habits. Also, I am not interested in "high risk" pk'ing, such as using Dragon Claws or God Swords (I don't have that sort of money, and I believe that there are cheaper alternatives that work just as well).

Well, now that I got that out of the way... is there a way to become a better pk'er, using my skills and not having to spend millions on gear? Is there a way to be a good pk'er using cheaper alternatives for pk'ing? and lastly, is there ways of becoming better with my timing (potting, eating, specials)?

In terms of PKing, the best experience you can get is in the field. If you don't have the money to risk, I'd suggest TzHaar fight pits, Duel Arena or safe FFA clan wars. The skill is knowing when to eat, when to pot, when to switch weapons, armour, pray, everything. A pro PKers's decisions need to be accurate and made sometimes within milliseconds.

In terms of stats, you want to decide on your style. You're not a 1-itemer, so you want things to be balanced. If you're melee you want 99 def and 99 str. If you're range, you want 99 def and 99 range, for mage 99 def and 99 mage, etc. I've seen these stats with a lot of my opponents, and it works out really well. The 99 def isn't really neccesary, but I'd say at least 90 is useful. Maxed out is always nice, but you don't neccessarily need to be. As long as you avoid fighting with a primary style that's under level 90, you should be ok to start.

Some starting advice I can give -

- Have a decent amount of money - obvious, for when you start going into the wild
- Try and find a setup in terms of food/gear that suits you personally. Recent PK videos are a good starting point, but they're not always going to be what you need.
- Familiarise yourself with playing in the old Fixed width of RuneScape. You see only what you need to see, and there's less space between things so less distance for the mouse to travel and less time wasted.
- Never go PKing when you have lag. Lag = death.
- Use a mouse. Touchpad - death.
- Use the minimum detail settings. I know seeing the squares on the ground looks shite, but sometimes it can be really useful.
- Familiarise yourself with the Function keys which swich to:

F1 - Inventory
F2 - Worn equipment
F3 - Prayer menu
F4 - Spellbook
F5 - Attack style

With one hand on the keyboard and one on the mouse, it'll save more time.

That's all I can think of for the moment. Best of luck biggrin.gif

Thanks for that advice! I'm definitely going to try the fight pits and safe portal. I'm definitely more melee than anything, and I like that style the best. I already have 82 defence, and I've noticed that whenever I did attempt to pk, my oppents had a harder time hitting on me. I suppose my problem is mainly with my nerves and timing.

pking only makes money if you're a great pker. otherwise you're in for a suprise.

if you can incorporate merchanting into your routine and set yourself a losing cap (the maximum amount of gp loss per day) then you'll not only set yourself up for success but also be able to cut your losses compared to the majority that pk until they are left dry. and have to work hard to make up for it.

one thing i've found interesting is that your attacking gear is more important than your defence gear in terms that most of the pkers u come in contact with won't have much to risk but pack a deadly punch so alittle extra gp on a gear can go a long way.

additional: there's alot of merchanting information out there. just make sure to know a bit about your risk level so you don't get into a bad call. when i joined wg i disliked pking because of all the gp i would lose and the amount of time it would take to make it all back (1m of green dragons isn't fun). i did manage to learn merchanting which has helped me in the long haul so if i pked and loss it wouldn't matter. i still have a lossing cap just because losing 100m in wilderness is giving away free rune.

I do not pk unless with the clan on a raid or forced to go with like a friend. But I find that having stats of 90+ in my combat has helped.

I'm not sure where you train or what type you enjoy, but I found a great place to train. You have to have completed a quest. (Defenders of Varrock) This might be something to read the clan guide we have on this. Armored Zombies are lvl 85 I think and they drop decent amounts of stuff and fast xp.

I don't go anymore cause I lost some of the gear I liked to use.

Try Duel Arena Tournaments, don't go into high stakes but try them out and if you stay in the style you want to use to PK you'll see what other people do.

Fist of Guthix is also a good place to practice hybriding or switching styles and gets you tokens for the stuff you need as part of gear reqs.

Don't worry about what other people say about you when you fight them.

It's honestly more important than it sounds. I can't remember the times when I first started pking that I died because I didn't eat just because some noob said I was "safing."

I tend to go by the general rule that most solo pkers are complete douche bags, and from all the experience I have, it has held true for the most part.

Don't sit there at 40hp just because some noob says "omg noob my max is only 30" and the guy watching you fight keeps saying "s4f3r z0mg n00bz."

As for the most important part of pking, which I consider timing...I honestly don't think it's something you can teach.

It depends on what weapon/combo you are using first of all, if you are using vengeance or ancients, etc.

Make sure you have a good feel for how long each attack with your main weapon is. Sometimes it's a good idea to take risks at low hp if you know you will attack before they day and have a chance to eat again.

Oh and don't trust most people that want to "dm" (deathmatch) you. If you don't know that means that you fight to the death. Most people who want to dm will just as soon run from you when they're out of food, but yell at you for doing the same thing.

Oh I usually only target pk. It's dull and boring sometimes, but otherwise I usually have very low ep and get horrible drops because I usually kill most of the people I fight.

If you need any personal help let me know. I'm considering starting to make some PvP vids if I get the time this summer, and I'll post them somewhere on the forums if I do.

I tend to follow that same rule. For example, instead of me leaving my public chat on for me to let them down talk me for trying to survive, I switch it off. It helps, because it's less distraction for me.
