Fucking horrible. Even with Realtime CPU priority, my 7:30-minute war video takes 2 hours on my dual-core laptop, with it being in 720p and HD. I feel sorry for these guys who do proper films which 1- take days of editing, and 2- are in 1080p/i (Full-HD) and multiple hours long. Without a farm, it'd take like a week on general public-affordable technology.

So when my laptop screen shut off and was overheating to fuck, and after shutting down and it refusing to start back up, I feared the worst. Thankfully, it was only the power cable adaptor that was broken, and I easily replaced that with a spare.

But of course, I'm taking no chances. And I've set up an external cooling system in DIY style:

Sexy? I think so hash.png It consists simply of a wooden box which I took the top and right side off, and my electric fan/heater (Obviously on fan) which is stacked on top of a chair, my guitar amp and the Yellow Pages to reach desk-height. And so far, it's working great biggrin.gif

Anyway, for those interested, a preview of the upcoming vid is here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv7gviMVBfw&fmt=22

That's 35 seconds and took 20 minutes to render tongue.gif

Anyway my vid is on 77% so when it's done, I'll take the preview off and post the proper one in the war forum.

I do. And a server as well.

That was my original setup. I now have the silver screen connected to my server, and the black one is my desktop.

However, the laptop is actually better than my desktop (Which was made in 2003ish), so I do all my video editing and 'scaping on there.

I am looking to get a new one - something super epic with 2 21" full-HD screens, epic graphics card, quad-core (Or possibly 8, if I can afford it)., all that lovely shit.

Unfortunately, even the minimum of what I need costs in excess of £1k if I built it myself, and at my current wage that's a year of saving (Not counting my RuneFest funds, my new guitar, and other stuff like that).

HD video takes alot of processing. I was converting a bluray disc into something that would fit onto a dual layer dvd. It took my laptop a solid 24 hours to re-encode the 1080p video. I repeated the process several times because I wasn't happy with final result or the rip was still too big by a few megabytes.

Laptop still runs fine. I need to open it up and clean out 3 years worth of dust I think because the fan spins up over the littlest thing now.

The new GPU's Apple is putting into the macbook's actually support hardware encoding which is awesome because it takes the load off the CPU and is waaaaaaay faster than having the CPU encode the video. Intel finally admitted that a 2 year old GPU is still "14 times faster" than its latest and greatest i7. Apparently it's more along the lines of 100 times faster in certain parallel processing areas.

Stay away from HP as a tip. They make shoddy laptops at best.

Don't I know it already tongue.gif

Hell, I wish I had a Mac. I wish I could AFFORD a Mac, for that matter.

@Joe, I have 2 desktops, 2 laptops, a server and a netbook. Think I could combine them all for the 6-CPU processing power somehow?

Video upload just hit 85%. I'll post as soon as it's uploaded and processed.

Yeah video rendering takes forever. I remember back in highschool (2 - 3-ish years ago) in my computers class we made videos and sometimes they would be so big that we'd be working on it on a Friday and would let render and would come back on the Monday and it would JUST be finished. It's crazy. There are specific video cards and processors though that are made for video/graphic editing which suck at playing video games but when it comes down to rendering a photo or video takes probably half if not less of the time.

Yeah. When you have a huge movie poster that is a few feet by a few feet it takes a long time to render. Just to give you an example (if you have photoshop) go an make a photo that's 60"x36" and try doing a simple brush stroke that's up to size with the document and watch you're computer slowwwww down. Trust me, photo editing can be just as hard on your computer.

P.S. it's real time rendering

My buddy combined his older macbook with his old HP P4HT laptop just by connecting over ethernet cable to do just that. I'll find out what software he used for you.

Not if you're on integrated graphics.

This is the response I got.

the imac did all the work. I ran XGRID lite on the imac. There was only a small python software to trick the XGRID that the HP was a mac. I dunno of any windows clustering software. Theres allot under linux, maybe ubuntu has something.
