So I've been spending some time in my new school's public computer lab. It runs on a network and everyone has their own log-in names etc. I can't say I know too much about the way these things works so hopefully someone can answer my question. I don't really feel comfortable going on websites like facebook or runescape where someone could maybe steal my passwords. Should I worry about that or no... it seems safe but who knows what could of been installed...

Personally, I wouldn't play RS anywhere other than my own computer (but that's more because I wouldn't want to be seen scaping' lolz). You may also find that the internet is too slow to run RS, or that games & shit are blocked.

As for is it safe, I couldn't be 100% sure, but if the IT dept. at you school is competent at all I would say that it is very unlikely that anyone could install any keylogger on those computers.

Lol, I was only wondering about scape just in case we had a major war (I would find a nice dark back corner in the library).

unless an administrator or tech specialist is insane at using computers, AND PLAYS RS then i wouldn't worry. For example, my old tech guy in the school thought that my friend was using up all of the internet

At my old school they claimed they had a key logger purposely installed on all of the computers because since they were providing the connection they felt they had the right to be able to look at everything we did on them. TBH we never knew if it was something they made up to keep idiots from doing things they wouldn't approve of or not. I never knew of anyone who had a problem come from it, but I don't know anyone who broke the rules either.

Yeah Randy, I don't see this being a problem, ever, unless the IT guys are morons.

Unless you're at MIT I wouldn't worry.

Runescape? if you can play it, don't worry about it.
Facebook/myspace? I wouldn't.

Your main problem accessing on public computers sites like Facebook/MySpace would be forgetting to log off.

If you are concerned about people stealing your password then just use the OnScreen keyboard which would defeat most keylogging attempts.

Most schools I imagine would have something to block commonly access games and the like, which I imagine RuneScape is included in. Short of a VPN or Proxy I can't think of any particularly easy way to bypass the filter though.

I personally wouldn't send any valuable data over a public connection, partly because I don't trust the PC, partly because I don't want someone looking over my shoulder but mostly because I don't really find it necessary.
