Okay time for a serious topic.

Why is it expected of us to tip people who do certain jobs?

Taxi drivers, delivery boys, croupiers in the casino... most people give these people tips for their "services", despite the fact that they get paid a basic wage just like everybody else doing their job.

We don't tip guys packing our bags in supermarkets or cleaners as they go through town picking your shit up off the floor. Or even bus drivers (what makes Taxi drivers special? I'm pretty sure they make more money than bus drivers.)

Yet it's considered rude not to tip certain people.

Whole system is fucked up. This is why I don't tip.

Your thoughts on the subject?

Nice topic Steve, here in Montreal,Qc we are forced by law to give 10% of the bill as tip to restaurant waiters, other than that I tip when I feel like it. hash.png

I normally only tip hot women. Generally after I've had a drink.

But yeah the system is a bit fucked up, I suppose a lot of retail staff get commission on what they sell so it doesn't make sense to tip them as well. The rest of the people you listed get tips depending on the quality of their service.

I think a lot of it is about the fact that when people are enjoying themselves they are more likely to give money away.

Waiters/waitresses are actually paid less than minimum wage in America idk bout everywhere else. They rely on tips. But I agree, it shouldn't be that way.

In New Zealand its thankfully very very uncommon to even have an opportunity to tip in most places and it's unusual to find anywhere that really encourages them.

I certainly don't tip Taxi Drivers, why would I give Taxi drivers extra money when they already cost way too much and they're hardly 'professional' drivers lol.

I hope Tipping never becomes common in NZ, I would rather people got paid well (the minimum wage over here and in Aus is pretty high compared to the UK) and we pay slightly more rather than feeling obligated to leave tips neko2.gif

Well about the not tipping bus drivers but tipping taxi's I thought that was obvious, Taxi's take us to specific location and only run cause we call them, bus drivers will take the specified route regardless. But yea, I take taxis loads when at uni and have never tipped one, never even thought about tipping them till this topic lol.

In the case of waiters I only tip them if I feel they deserve it, as in they did their job well, and aided in going to the restaurant a pleasant experience.

And for delivery boys well depends on how quickly they brought the food to my doorstep tongue.gif. But it usually comes to like 18 pounds, and it's effort carrying change, so it makes sense for the kid to keep the 2 pound change. Unless he takes forever than I can be a pain and ask for my change eck13.gif

They should pay everyone minimum wage so i don't have to tip.

15% on an 80$ meal when she brought us 2 plates and 2 drinks?

No thanks.

In australia we pay minimum wage $14.75 AUD p/hr ($1 AUD = 85-90 US cents) and i the only time i have ever seen tipping, or tipped myself is when you buy beer at a pub and the barman is a great bloke/lady you chuck in whatever coin you have from your note into the jar (usually like 50 cents)

A couple weeks ago I went to dinner with my boss's boss. He makes 6 figures. We went to an Italian restaurant, and the meal for the bill came to £160. He paid £200 for it. A £40 tip. My dad has a habit of giving tips to people as well - shops, taxis, pubs, even pizza delivery guys. And I've turned to it as well. Seeing as the world revolves around money I find it as kind of a social point. You're giving extra to a person who does something directly for you. Bus drivers and so are more indirect.

And I pack my own bags at the supermarket hash.png

You are right there, but in defense, if they know a part of their wages come from tips, why do most of them act like they have a stick up their backside? To me if you work in an industry that you are dependent on tips to be a part of your wages, then I'd bust my butt trying to make sure that I make an impression, hoping that Stokenut does tip that one time wub.gif

I will tip you a penny if your service is crappy. If you do a great job, you may end up with 20-60% of a tip. Guess it all depends on the "service".

As for the bag boy and others, I will admit I have never thought to add them to the standard list of people to tip, guess I'm not the only one, but if they assist me to the car with grocery's well sure as hell I do tip the poor soul.

Overall, great "food for thought"!

The way I see it is why should I tip a waitress to compensate for her lack of wage? The Restaurant should be paying her a good enough wage based on her performance. Not allowing the customer to cover their lack of commitment to their employment.

Regardless of the above, I still tip. But, I will never tip more than some one deserves, even if the restaurant demands it on the bill.

In Australia there's a price and you pay it.
Tips should be bonuses, not expected.
Waitresses and such should just get paid a decent living wage in the first place.

Man I hate that. Dollar store items weren't really $1, they were $1.06. Got on my nerves.

But still, better than the UK's 17.5% or some shit. And of course it all goes to the good cause of buying our members of parliament's second homes, plasma screen TVs and porn stashes.

Come on Keanu don't be like that.
I don't mind paying more tax. England's system isn't so corrupt as to pocket all that money. You have the NHS and other wonderful things.
I'm very impressed with England's governmental systems.

Well, I only really tip waiters and waitresses. they do something directly for me, when I want it. I figure that it's just a gesture of kindness that I give them a personal little bonus of $1-3.

In the Philippines however, tipping is a little different. Waiters and waitresses don't really get tipped (unless you're just lazy and don't want to carry around change - I always take the bills) but other professions do. Whenever I order McDonald's (home delivery) I tip the delivery guy, and for whatever reason, it's customary to tip barbers in this country.

Part of what determines whether or not we tip (in the Philippines) is if there is an inclusion of the VAT (Value added tax - basically sales tax built into the price). If the VAT is included, we don't tip, and if there isn't a VAT, then we do. It's funny though, because my family is diplomatic, we have cards that exempt us from paying the VAT so if the bill is big enough, we just pop it out and tip what we feel is deserving.

It's not so bad because in the Philippines an acceptable tip is like 50 cents, and we usually give a WHOLE dollar, but it's something I'd never consider in the US.

I've personally never tipped a taxi, in the US or any of the other places I've lived.

I've never felt compelled to NOT tip. I've always just felt it was a nice gesture of kindness to people that serve me.

Lol

Try canada, our sales tax is much higher.

I went to Detroit for a night to fly out to Cancun and our dinner was 74$ and like 78 with tax. It's no wonder they have suggest a retarded deficit, they pay next to nothing for taxes.

For service people, they rely on tips because they're paid under minimum wage because they get tips. Excluding waiters/waitresses/barbers I don't see the point in tipping.

Taxi drivers and waiters/waitresses actually have to mingle with the customers, so you get a feeling of comfort while in the taxi/restaurant. As far as tipping in restaurants goes, a fair chunk of their wages actually come from tips, so no tips equals no payslip.

Now that I think about it, I've never tipped a taxi driver. They drive slowly and take the long routes which in turn costs you more money. Fuck them rofl.

They just usually only get minimum without any healthcare etc. All the waitresses I know aren't even allowed to work full time so the tips make up for it.

I only tip waiters/waitresses if they did a good job. Usually around 10-15% of the tab.

Edit:
QUOTE
Question: Is it legal for waiters and waitresses to be paid below the minimum wage?

Answer: According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, tipped employees are individuals engaged in occupations in which they customarily and regularly receive more than $30 a month in tips. The employer may consider tips as part of wages, but the employer must pay at least $2.13 an hour in direct wages.

An employer may credit a portion of a tipped employee's tips against the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009. An employer must pay at least $2.13 per hour. However, if an employee's tips combined with the employer's wage of $2.13 per hour do not equal the hourly minimum wage, the employer is required to make up the difference.

The employer who elects to use the tip credit provision must inform the employee in advance and must be able to show that the employee receives at least the applicable minimum wage (see above) when direct wages and the tip credit allowance are combined. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Also, employees must retain all of their tips, except to the extent that they participate in a valid tip pooling or sharing arrangement.

I guess they do get paid below minimum.

Personally, I mainly feel compelled to tip people who serve me directly as I order and does a good job. Unless someone else does an exceptionally good job on something, and impresses me, I'm generally less inclined to shed nothing more than a smile and a 'thank you'.
