BLACK METAL, the best kind of metal by far. Originating in Newcastle, England with the release of (band) Venom's album entitled "Black Metal", the first wave of Black Metal took place in the '80s with bands like Venom, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer and Bathory. According to wikipedia, "It often uses fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, and unconventional song structure."

In the late '80s early '90s, however, a second wave arose- A band from Norway called "Mayhem" emerged. Norwegian Black Metal was born. Norwegian Black Metal bands to date include Mayhem, Immortal, Burzum, Dimmu Borgir, Darkthrone, Tsjuder, 1349, and Emperor.

---
According to wikipedia;

The Second Wave of black metal emerged in the early 1990s and was largely centred on the Norwegian black metal scene. During 1990–1994 a number of Norwegian artists began performing and releasing black metal music; this included Mayhem, Burzum, Immortal, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Enslaved, Emperor, Thorns, Ildjarn, Gorgoroth, Ulver and Carpathian Forest.

A few bands in neighbouring Sweden adopted a similar sound, usually with inspiration from the Norwegian scene. This included Marduk, Dissection, Lord Belial, Dark Funeral, Arckanum, Nifelheim and Abruptum. In Finland, the late 1980s saw the emergence of black metal bands who often included traits similar to those found in death metal such as Beherit, Archgoat and Impaled Nazarene.

In Poland, a scene was spearheaded by Graveland and Behemoth.
---

So as you can see, Black Metal spread throughout Europe like a contagious disease.

Please click the following YouTube links to check out some good Black Metal songs. I encourage you to check out this genre, especially since it is the best.

Clearly, and sadly, you are too weak for this kind of music. Which did you click on? Just curious.

It's average. I prefer other kinds of metal, which I don't even know the classes of. Thanks for sharing though, was actually quite interesting.

Thanks for looking into it. There are tons of classes of metal, you should really look into researching the vast kinds there are. For one, "Heavy Metal" does not exist anymore, Heavy Metal was a genre of the '60s, '70s and even '80s with bands like Guns 'N Roses and other bands that are today considered classic rock or classic metal.

Some other various metal subgenres include:

Alternative Metal
Folk Metal
Death Metal
Doom Metal
Gothic Metal
Industrial Metal
Power Metal
Speed Metal
Viking Metal
Symphonic Metal
Thrash Metal

It's kind of sad that many people today don't understand the differences in metal bands and often refer to them as just "Heavy Metal" or "Hardcore". But whatever smile.gif

Power metal is cool, speed/thrash is ok,

I really love the old british metal bands. The original metal bands.

Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Priest...I have more classic rock roots than metal.

If you haven't, you should watch "A Headbanger's Journey" or "Global Metal". Two documentaries by Sam Dunn on everything metal.

Oh yeah just remembered this. Is your former "leader" of black metal not in jail for multiple accounts of church burning somewhere? I think he's spending his time reading up on the Bible if I'm not mistaken.

If you're talking about Varg Vikernes, he actually was released from jail approximately a year and a half ago, and released a new Burzum album around this past March. I don't know if he reads the bible now... But I doubt it.

This is his biography:

http://www.burzum.org/eng/biography.shtml

Furthermore, I think I may have seen bits & pieces of one of those documentaries on HBO or something. Interesting stuff. I also have an appreciation for Iron Maiden and especially Black Sabbath. I was watching a documentary on Sabbath and towards the end they were talking about how even younger people who are into newer genres "have time" for Sabbath. I believe this to be true.

Children of Bodom is the heaviest I go, which some call melodic death metal. Apart from that I don't go past the classic Thrash which is Megadeth, Metallica, etc.

But thanks for sharing smile.gif

Too heavy for me. I don't like too heavy of things. Even some Metallica gets too heavy for me. It was a great lesson on metal though. I have never really gotten into the whole genre and how it is broken down. It always confused me, and I haven't ever really liked "metal", so I just kind of ignored it. tongue.gif

Gorgoroth

I have just read the headline, thought its about some real black "metal" and smithing in England. Clicked on link and started to reading the text. I awaited some medieval baladic tunes like from LOTRO + I didnt realize my audio was at high volume. I were really shocked.

In actuality it does.
Lot's of vocal training is needed to get those screams to sound just right.
Then their also being able to play at a high speed.
Along with Drumming which has to keep up with the tempo.
But yes it sound's bad because they distort their sound slightly during their song's.

P.S: check out Tuhat Vuotta by the Finnish black metal band Catamenia

Sounds like it doesn't take much talent to make black metal music.

You are partially correct. It doesn't take much talent to make mediocre or shitty black metal.

However, it takes EXTREME talent to make good black metal. Consider these factors:

Drumming: Blast-beat drumming- It seems repetitive and simple, but it really does take stamina and technique to be able to blast beat for BM songs. Some good BM drummers are Frost of 1349, Hellhammer of Mayhem, and Nick Barker (former Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir).

Guitars: While a lot of bands do use simple guitar in their music (almost like two rhythm guitarists), quite a few bands use complex tremolo picking and crazy solos in their guitar sections. If you want to see good Black Metal guitarists, I suggest looking up "Astennu" (former Dimmu Borgir), "Euronymous" (Former Mayhem), and to check out the band Tsjuder.

Bass: Not a lot to say here other than the fact that many BM bands use fast picking bass similar to fast picking guitars.

Vocals: Have you listened to ANY Black Metal, or just Metal song in general? Black Metal vocals are NOT easy. It takes practice and dedication, as well as the ability to cope with possibly basically ruining your throat for the rest of your life.

Keys/Synthesizers: Not many Black Metal bands use these, and those who do are often regarded as "Symphonic Black Metal" bands, but if you want to check out a ridiculously talented pianist I strongly suggest Mustis (former Dimmu Borgir).

I usually like almost all types of music, but this kind is annoying as hell to me.
I've actually tried to listen to quite a few of the links and couldn't last the song durations.
Children of Bodom is good though. Whatever genre that is.

@Rob - I'd call CoB Melodic Death Metal, that seems to be their usual definition.
