So yeah, a few of you guys may have heard that Christchurch, NZ (Where I live) was hit by a magnitude 7.1 Earthquake on Saturday, well today I finally got off my ass and went out to take some photo's of some of the damage:

We decided that to be considerate we wouldn't take pics of peoples houses and so on, as a result this is pretty much pics of businesses/public buildings and infrastructure

That's what most chimneys are like in my neighborhood

The Next few photo's are of Kaiapoi, a town about 10km from Christchurch

All of those are just around the centre of Kaiapoi.

The worst damage to this area resulted from liquefaction, but they also has some resulting from ground movements:

Dibs not being the first one to walk over that tongue.gif

Not particularly obvious there, but those stairs have slumped heaps (probably dropped by a foot at the top).

From here on is just general damage around Kaiapoi

Once again hard to tell, but that is about 30cm/1 foot of overlap

Yeah man, i didn't even feel it but apparently people here could. To think the last one in Napier, back in the day, was like 7.8 and it did so much more damage.

Sounds like there isn't much of a big diff between 7.1-7.8 but there truly is. Hope you didn't get affected too much. There's like 5 reporters from 3 News there lol.

And i bet your mayor is getting himself in the good-books for the next election after all this thats happening. He seems to be handling it pretty well.

Well I hope the clean-up isn't too bad at your place mate. Can't be too bad if your still on the net. Good luck.

This is probably the most spectacular lot:

That is where a pertol stations fuel tanks have floated up due to the soil liquefying. Huge amount of damage to houses around there, but as I said above, I decided not to take pics of houses and so on.

I was very very lucky. Our house managed to escape pretty much unscathed, with just a few cracks in the masonry (pics below). Current estimates suggest that this will cost upwards of $2 Billion NZD (approx 1.45b USD) to repair

Ouch, I think the bridge pictures are the most spectacular, that's crazy neko2.gif
Glad to hear you're all ok and that no one close to you was injured or suffered much damage to property.

Lucky you (in a way) that you have another week of hols since your uni is closed, although from the videos + pics that you showed me of your uni, damage there is pretty catastrophic and will take a good few years to fix i would imagine...

Nasty, I am glad you are ok. Not quite as nasty as tornado that touched down 1 block from where I was living at the time. I did not make it to University that night or for a week after. Bad memories fortunately long past.

California is expecting some massive quakes... I wouldn't take too much for granted.

I'm glad you're okay, JC. It's going to suck catching up to everything that's been damaged, but I hope everything will turn out well.

Damn, worst pictures here are probably the bridge, the pavement by the store and the petrol station. Some houses like you say are probably pretty bad.

Hope no one was injured or hurt, but unfortunately that isn't the case usually.

Aftershocks are getting fucking ridiculous, they're said to last up to 2 weeks (it's been 6 days) but as of this morning (18 hours ago):

QUOTE
In all, Canterbury has received 270 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or above since Saturday morning. GNS Science seismologist Brian Ferris estimates people would have felt about 150 of them.

NZ Herald Source

Got hit by a close & shallow 4.0 tonight which ended up collapsing the front of a building at the shops not far down the road. The novelty and shit is starting to run out very quickly, although it is nice that we have got a further week off of university (damage to the uni is more severe than they thought , library is closed for the rest of term) neko2.gif

Really though, that's pretty sick. I've never been in an earthquake but always wanted to experience one. (Is that crazy?)

Also, how many people died?

Really though, that's pretty sick. I've never been in an earthquake but always wanted to experience one. (Is that crazy?)

Also, how many people died?

None directly, in fact there was only two people seriously injured (by a falling chimney and falling glass) and someone did die of a heart attack which of course could be related.

Considering that the earthquake struck in similar conditions to the Haiti Earthquake earlier this year, I guess we're lucky that this is a developed country (With building standards that are more earthquake savvy than most) and that the earthquake struck in the early hours of the morning while the vast majority of people were sleeping (4.30am).

As for wanting to experience one, I totally agree since I am fascinated by earthquakes (From an academic point of view they are quite interesting) that it is pretty surreal to have one happen in the city that I live in that has caused so much damage (in particular it is amazing how swiftly repairs have been completed, to put it in perspective they were saying this morning that they have fixed the water supply.... that's after 6 days and involved nearly 300 repairs to some pretty major sections of pipework. They suggested it was normally a years worth of work, which either represents how slow they are normally or how fast they are now tongue.gif ).

Its the aftershocks that are a bitch, they're never ending and they are just strong enough to disrupt & cause damage to already weakened buildings.

Probably. You're not alone; I do too... but I try to refrain from saying it... since people lose their lives due to them.

Damn JC, glad you're alright and no one was directly killed. That's some major damage there. I'd be fascinated too tho, i gotta say. Maybe you can use it as a GIS case study or something hash.png

Steve, you never felt the ones we've had in the UK? I thought they were centred nearer you than me. Like that lincoln one, woke me up from my sleep that (yeah, us brits are hardcore with our mag 4's =s)

What do you know, I've kinda been playing around with a basic 'GIS Style' way to present those photo's Mike, take a look at this if you're interested:

http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=...4b1b93b43827cb1

Still got some work to do (like getting it to link to some bigger photo's ) but I'll do that later today I guess.
