Some engineers have proposed building a new version of New Orleans on prefabricated floating platforms to protect the city from future hurricanes and flooding.

What do you guys think about it?

That's so badass. They make it seem like it could be done so if it were my choice I'd definitely do it.

To be frank, that's a ridiculous idea that ignores a wide variety of issues that would crop up.

"Yay I feel seasick every day because my city is floating"

"Hey lets go visit our family in New Orleans, oh no, I don't have a boat"

"I wanna work on the mainland but live in New Orleans.... shit can't drive to work"

etc etc.

Personally I think its an idiotic idea that would be made even worse by its location.... Yup, smart idea to trial a floating city in an area that is well known for being at risk from hurricanes.

1) nobody would be seasick, since the city wouldn't move, it's impossible.

2 and 3) how is it any different from living on an island?

well me, i think the idea isn't anything new...it is a good idea but i'm 100% sure it won't happen. The good thing about it is the idea itself, it doesn't matter that they can't really make it happen, what counts is the idea and the fact that people start thinking about stuff like that and eventually after 100s of ideas that only went as far as being on paper will lead to one good idea that will actually happen.

Quite frankly I do not think that it will work. You may have noticed that some boat were blown in land and were left after the water receded.

I'd blow the billions of dollars on this for sure, just for the sake of novelty.
Our generation as a species has nothing amazing to leave our mark, such as the pyramids or the hanging gardens, or Venice.

Having a floating city would be a true mark of human advancement.

For those that don't know, in Mississippi, the casinos are all floating. It fits within the laws to have gambling boats, but there can be no casinos on land.

LOL. I guess its an ok idea if they really think its necessary. May be a pain in the ass but like Gene said, it would be a great thing of our time.

Yes. Completely serious. This was prior to Hurricane Katrina. After Hurricane Katrina, the governor passed a bill to allow the casinos to build the actual gambling rooms up to 800 feet inland. Before that, everything except the actual gambling was on land, and the gambling was held on a barge that was permanently docked in the water.
