Heya guys, I doubt any of you know, but I'm quite a keen actor at school and am hoping to pass it as one of my life ambitions is to work on the west end, or even be in movies, but I'm not going to get too ahead of myself xD

But basically, I'm having a drama examination soon on monologues, and I've been looking around for one to do, I found this on Youtube recently and was just wondering who thought it could be acted out well.

The video is called "To Claire; From Sonny." Please take a moment to watch it and give me an opinion. Thanks a lot.

i think it's an exceptional idea. The concept is great but the fact that you wont be able to play a video with it may leave the conclusion a bit hazey. Also i'm not sure how you would start off (typing the letter on stage while reading to yourself or reading it from your hand or what) But i think that you should first talk personally to the audiance and bring them into the story. Say that you wrote it for her instead of how it says "i'm writing this for you and i doubt it will even get to you". Mend it a little to fit a stage scene is all im saying. Otherwise i think it will go over great!

p.s.-DONT PLAY A VIDEO! The words were sweet. The video pissed me off wierdly enough.

Heya mate,
It seems that we have a lot in common then biggrin.gif
How old are you may I ask, this answer may help in giving you advice.

I've been involved in amateur drama for about 8 years now, both at school, and I am now doing Drama at University, so I am in a good place to advise you...
I haven't had that much experience in monologues, but I have had a bit, and in my experience, monologues need to go somewhere in order to keep your audience interested.

Although this monologue is very moving, thought-provoking and, in a way beautiful, I am wondering, but not sure, if this only works with the video over the top...
What I mean is, if you look at the monologues by Alan Bennet (Talking Heads), yes, they are very long monologues, maybe 30 mins each, however there are moments of calm followed by other moments of total hillarity, so there are ups and downs in the content and deliverance of the monologue.

I worry that if you use the one above, there will be no ups and downs because it essentially stays on one level.

Also, how long does your chosen piece have to be, or is there no limit? If so, it may be worth extending this to make it a little bit longer... possibly.

I may be wrong, but that is my opinion. Either way, I haven't seen you act and I am sure you are very good. It takes a good actor to pull off a successful monologue.

Good luck mate, and if you need any more advice on anything drama, i'm your man smile.gif

Haha, I see where you're coming from, I was planning to have myself center stage writing it on paper as I said it, and as the scene's went on, I'd have props brought onto stage to set the scene, and for the gravestone scene I was going to place the gravestone behind the audience and split through them as I did that scene. But as you said, I'm going to have to give it some thoughts, thanks for the constructive criticism biggrin.gif

Haha, I'm 15 and pleased to meet somebody who shares my interest in performing arts smile.gif

Yeah I've heard about heads, although I'm sure my friend Aidan has taken that one, as you said I may need to extend it and/or change certain moments in it to keep attention, I was planning on having the backing track a long in the background as well and what I said in Bhulers's reply, thank you for the comment, and I'll be sure to message you if I need any help, thank you for the constructive criticism smile.gif

Maybe we're thinking of two different things, but I fadedly remember performing it with a partner last year, but it was a short 12 line thing.. it was two people complaining about where somebody was whom was supposed to be meeting them.. may be another performance though.

Mmm I saw a production of Road a few months ago at my University.
Tom may be right in that there are some monologues in there, you should check it out.
