This excerpt occurs after the man finds an ancient musical instrument(a guitar) and takes it to the high priests(the leaders of his world) and they abruptly destroy it and kill his dreams. The song itself portrays a vision of a world enslaved from free thought and emotion, and seeks to do away with this awful way of life.

I wandered home though silent streets
And fell into a fitful sleep
Escape to realms beyond the night
Dream cant you show me the light?

I stand atop a spiral stair
An oracle confronts me there
He leads me on light years away
Through astral nights, galactic days

I see the works of gifted hands
That grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes

They left the planets long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home, to tear the temples down...
Home, to change..

The sleep is still in my eyes
The dream is still in my head
I heave a sigh and sadly smile
And lie a while in bed
I wish that it might come to pass
Not fade like all my dreams

Just think of what my life might be
In a world like I have seen

I dont think I can carry on
Carry on this cold and empty life
Oh...noo!

My spirits are low in the depths of despair
My lifeblood spills over..

Underlined parts are the most important that you should really focus on, but certainly take in the whole thing. Imagine what this world could be like... Imagine what YOU could do if you weren't held down by a society built to restrain your thoughts and emotions. Imagine... And eventually do.

I for one have had the dream that Rush sings of, a dream of a world where we are free from all bonds to express our true capabilities. A world where we can do anything we put our minds to, with no corruption, no greed, no hatred, no evil. It can be done, but first we have to redeem ourselves. We've grown too deeply entwined with these traits and it may take a while to grow back out of them, but we can. Not as a country, not as a race, not as a religion or a political part, but as Humanity. When I first realized this dream I too felt saddened, much as in the song. Our world is slipping into despair and I'm sure you are all starting to see it. The time is quickly approaching when we need to head in a new direction, a vastly different path from where we are now, and I hope, not pray, that I will see it happen within my lifetime. I truly was saddened by the state of our world, but once I realized what we could do with it... I drew hope and strength from those thoughts. Now I hope you will all do the same. Together, humanity can thrive once again.
