Blogs / Post completionist syndrome.
November 04, 2013, 10:50:25 PM
So after finally achieving the Completionists cape, I was kinda stuck on what to do, I'd been working towards it for so long that once I'd finished I had literally no idea where to go from there.

So, I've decided I'm going to go for all drops from the 4 GWD bosses, solo.

I'm also not gonna sell anything until I have completed the collection, so I should end up with a nice loot tab at the end.

If I get enough practice at nex I might include those drops too, I'm not sure.

When I don't have time to waste getting killcount or go for an extended trip at GWD I am substituting in some Queen Black Dragon as well, so there will be some loot screenies from her too.

The Drops

Blogs / From crap to comp.
March 07, 2013, 02:24:53 PM
Couldn't think of a decent title that wasn't "Road to Max"

So as most of you know I've been working on max/comp cape tirelessly for the past year or so, and I've been meaning to post a blog to track my progress but never got round to it.

I'm starting to feel pretty close now, although there's still a lot of hours I need to put in.

Some previous updates from the Al vs Owen comp race topic:

So after focussing my voyages on gathering the resources necessary to make a Tetsu helm, my hard work finally paid off.

I'm nowhere near the first one in game, but I have got it very early on.

I have been checking forums, but the price guide seemed a bit unpredictable, so I just went to the GE, not expecting it to sell at mid price (100M), I was planning on lowering the price by 5m til it sold.

But then...

Okay, it's time for me to come clean.

What most of you know happened:

  • My forum account was compromised.
  • This was used to gain access to Kez and His Lordship's forum accounts.
  • Some RS account details were leaked.

What then happened:

  • Mark (Exiled WG, but a friend of mine) and I decided to pretend that I had been RATted, meaning Mark had access to control my PC.
  • We faked my CD drive being opened remotely, and desktops being changed etc.
  • Mark and scumtroll69 claimed they had Root access to our forums.
  • Thinking a severe cyber crime had been committed Gene and the Staff were in the process of building a legal case/police report.
  • Upon realising how far this 'practical joke' had gone, Mark and myself decided to come clean.

So, my forum account WAS compromised, that wasn't me pretending, that happened and forum security was breached but has now been fixed.  I've removed any threats found after an entire system scan and all passwords have been changed.

What happened after that, regarding the phony RAT, and the almost police action, I can not apologise enough for, particularly to Staff who were dealing with the problem, as soon as I realised it could have severe real life implications, I thought it best for me to take the heat for a joke gone horribly wrong.

I'd like to think previous to this I've had a good track record of knowing where the line is, and when to tip toe around it, but tonight I took a huge fucking bound over the line, the line was a dot to me.  I can only ask that you don't judge my character based on this one blip, but rather on my past actions and history.

I am wholeheartedly sorry for any inconvenience I caused and can only beg for your forgiveness.

Owen.

So with the announcement of the EoC release, and an improvement to solo/small dungeoneering exp gains, I decided I'd make use of the last bit of time with the current combat system to do some dungeoneering/PvM before it all changes and I have to learn it all again.

In here I'll post any achievements/drops I get in the run up to the EoC.

RuneScape Discussion / Bonus Exp Weekend
October 12, 2012, 08:52:31 AM
So, despite believing that there would be no more Bonus Exp Weekends, Jagex surprise us again with promise of one at the end of this month.

http://services.runescape.com/m=news/halloween-treat-scary-bonus-xp-weekend

Lasting from Noon GMT Saturday 27th - Noon GMT Monday 29th, 48 hours of Bonus EXP.

From the way this news post is worded, it seems as if this weekend will work different to others, instead of beginning with a 2.7x EXP modifier that decreases every 30 minutes until at 1.1x and remaining there for the duration of the weekend, this weekend will be Double Exp for Members, and even 20% Bonus Exp for Free Players.

What will you be training?

I'll be training Herblore first (I banked 99 literally hours before this news post, so managed to sell a lot of my supplies and saved myself 50m), after that probably Construction, Crafting and Agility.

Real Life Discussion / My First Fitness Blog
July 26, 2012, 06:23:22 PM
So, basically me and my friend have made a website where we will blog/post fitness related articles, usually dispelling some of the myths/fallacies that you hear/read in the gym or on the internet.

I wont link the website here because we aren't going to start posting properly until we have a bank of about 20 articles to release.

But here's a sneak preview:

Spot Reduction – Fact or Fiction

What is Spot Reduction?  Spot reduction is the 'belief' (I say belief and not theory), that training a particular area will burn fat from that area.  It's the reason you see countless people doing thousands of crunches trying to get that ever elusive six pack.
Speak to any slightly educated fitness professional, coach, or doctor and they will tell you it doesn't work.  The body is simply not programmed that way.

Look at it from the basis of all weight loss programs.  To lose weight you need to burn calories, if your 'Calories Out' (The calories you burn by living, breathing, exercising) is greater than your 'Calories In' (The calories consumed in food/drink) then you will lose weight.  It stands to reason then that to lose fat mass efficiently, you should do high calorie burning exercise with a low calorie/calorie controlled diet.

How many calories does a crunch burn you might ask?  According to livestrong.com a 160lb person doing 5 minutes of crunches will burn approximately 44 calories.

Let's take a look at the marmite of weightlifting, Barbell Squats (You either love them or hate them).  A 160lb person doing 160lb barbell squats burns around 100 calories in 5 minutes of total exercise.  (This might seem like an unattainable feat, but squatting bodyweight is achievable for almost anyone in a short amount of regular training).

See the difference?  Let's not even start to discuss the benefits of squatting over crunches to muscular development, especially in the abdomen/core and the metabolic effect of weight training, that's a whole new article.

Those numbers alone should tell you which you should be doing if you want to maximise weight loss.

Now let's talk fat storage/deposition and fat burning.  In women fat storage tends to occur mostly in the lower body, legs, thighs, bum.  In men it's the opposite, the upper body is the dump site for excess fat, in particular the gut, as well as the arms/chest.  This comes down to hormones and genetics controlling the adipose tissue (Where fat gets stored).

Fat burning is controlled by the drop in the levels of blood insulin and the release of other hormones, as you might be aware insulin is produced in the pancreas, and circulates in the blood stream controlling your blood sugar level.  If insulin levels fall, blood sugars stop being used as energy, and stored fats start to be released to make up this deficit, this is what causes fat loss.  Insulin levels don't fall in specific areas; due to the nature of the human blood stream, it is fairly uniform across the entire body, as such one would expect an almost uniform increase in the use of stored fats across the entire body, not localised in one particular area.

Being now aware of how insulin controls fat burning across the entire body, and the calorific benefits of whole body/compound movements such as squats rather than isolation movements such as crunches, which would you rather do to reveal those abs of steel?

This is not to say that crunches are a wholly redundant exercise, but their use as a fat burner is very limited.  More to come on crunches/core work in the future.

So, with all of these complaints about recent updates and all this negativity.  I thought I'd bring in some nostalgia.

As such me and gary went flipper hunting!

Obviously cos I'm so much better at runescaping I got 2 of each in less time than it took gary to get 1.

Without further ado!

Blogs / Bassism's Road to Max Gear
April 29, 2012, 06:59:25 AM
Okay, not quite MAX MAX Gear, but basically I'm trying to acquire as much high end gear as I can without just buying it, I've got a few gear goals in particular that I want to get, including chaotics, and Nex gear.  I won't be Nex'ing until I've got Eagle Eye Kiteshield and Rigour though, so I've been working on them alongside my current short term goal which is 100 Shards of Armadyl from Glacors so I can craft my own Armadyl Battlestaff.

Goals:
Chaotic Crossbow: Acquired
Eagle Eye Kiteshield: Acquired
Rigour: Acquired

Armadyl Battlestaff: Acquired
Steadfast Boots: Acquired
Glaiven Boots: Acquired

Screenshots:

Chaotic Crossbow

Glaiven Boots

Steadfast Boots

Ragefire Boots (Sold, 9m)

Eagle Eye Kiteshield

Armadyl Battlestaff

Once I have achieved my current goals, I will update to probably include Nex Gear.  For Nex I will probably be coinsharing, so that's a little bit different, but I will log and save any money I get from splits and buy gear as I can afford it.

Okay, couple of achievements I got recently:

This is probably my biggest/hardest achievement in Runescape cos I hate quests, but I figured it would be worth it.

Along the way I also worked on and managed to achieve 80+ all skills, but forgot to screenie.

Next goal, possibly 99 or 100 Dungeoneering, I'm starting to really get into it.

So we had a day of clear skies where I live yesterday, and I decided to head out for a jog, but at several points along the way I took some photographs.

I'm terrible at photography, I can always envision what I want to capture but can never seem to get it in the lens just how I want it.  Oh well.

These are all taken with an iPhone btw.

Okay, there's been some serious misuse of the word "Troll", and I think people need to be educated on what trolling really is.

Trolling

Definition:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.  The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted". (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_%28Internet%29 )

Obvious examples:

- Religion is stupid all it does is cause wars over some bearded guy in the sky.
- Homosexuality is stupid, why not just choose to not be gay?

^ The above two statements, if posted at random, or even during a discussion of the relevant subject would be considered trolling, because the poster either is saying them merely to provoke a reaction, or is genuiniely an idiot.

Banter

Definition:

Banter is non-serious conversation, usually between friends, which may rely on humour or in-jokes at the expense of those taking part. The purpose of banter may at first appear to be an offensive affront to the other person's face. However, people engaging in such a conversation are often signaling that they are comfortable enough in each others' company to be able to say such things without causing harm.   (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversation)

Obvious Examples:

<[JC]> Owen is a massive fgt, thats why

[01:05] * %[CU]RuneScript :D\-< Woo! Congrats on your Defence level 96 Mojohaza1 :D/-<
[01:06] <+Colinwarrior> GRATS BRO
[01:06] <+Colinwarrior> Now maybe you can tank

^ The two above statements are both banter, because both participants are aware that what they are saying is not being taken seriously and they are comfortable enough with each other (the people they are directly talking to) to throw these 'insults' at each other without offending anyone.

Conclusion:

Trolling, meant to be taken seriously, to provoke a reaction/emotive response.
Banter, not to be taken seriously, a joke.

Also, I felt I should add this:

"Banter is particularly difficult for those on the autism spectrum and those with semantic pragmatic disorder." (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversation )  So if you can't differentiate trolling from banter, this might be why ;)

We were dressed and ready to go out for the New Years Eve Party. We turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on, covered our pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard. We phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and we opened the front door to leave the house. The cat we put out in the back yard, scoots back into the front door.

We didn't want the cat shut in the house because she always tries to eat the bird.. My wife goes out to the taxi, while I went inside to get the cat. The cat runs upstairs, with me in hot pursuit. Waiting in the cab, my wife doesn't want the driver to know that the house will be empty for the night. So, she explains to the taxi driver that I will be out soon, 'He's just going upstairs to say Goodbye to my mother.'

A few minutes later, I get into the cab. 'Sorry I took so long,' I said, as we drove away. 'That stupid bitch was hiding under the bed. I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off, so I grabbed her by the neck. Then, I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked! I hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!

The cab driver hit a parked car.
