If money is a concern at all there's a few areas I would change to save a bit:

  • The i7 2600K isn't a huge upgrade over the i5 2500K, and if you're going with an aftermarket cooler then you don't need a retail box, you can get OEM which is about £5 cheaper: i5 2500k £161.75
  • The motherboard that you've got selected is really only suitable for dual GPU's as the third PCIe slot is restricted to 1/4 of max bandwidth if the other two are populated (the other two will run at x8/x8 if they're both in use which won't have a huge performance penalty).
  • The SSD you've picked has a reputation for having alot of issues lately (along with every other SSD using the Sandforce 22XX series), personally I'd recommend going with a Crucial M4 instead which has a much better reputation: 128GB Crucial M4 £151.34
  • 16gb of ram is excessive for gaming, you'll never use anything like that, but it does seem to be an alright price.  I'd probably downgrade to 8gb: 8GB (2x4GB) Corsair XMS3 £42.19
  • That Hard drive seems really expensive, you've got a fast SSD for your OS & Software so I'd go for a cheap low power 2TB drive like this: Seagate Barracuda 2TB £125.39

Overall your savings would be (doing the above):

  • £80 on the CPU
  • £40 on the RAM
  • £50 on the Hard drive

Which easily covers the extra expense of the more reliable SSD as well as getting you a significant way towards a second Graphics Card (Or you could go for two of these instead straight away: XFX HD6950 2GB version £196.43)

I guess I'll be the first to give some genuine advice, even if it is a little overdue ##

I'll suggest two setups, one intel, one AMD but there will be some parts that you'll need regardless of which option you choose:

Case - Fractal Design R3
Both Myself and Orthux have this case and we've both been impressed, you can get it in white or silver as well :3

Power Supply - Corsair CX 500W

Hard Drive - Samsung Spinpoint F3

Total ~£180

GPU Options:

MSI 6870 'Hawk' £150

EVGA GTX 560Ti £175

Intel Motherboard/CPU

CPU & Motherboard Combo - Asus P8P67 and Intel i5 2500K

£289

AMD Motherboard/CPU

Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-UD3

CPU: AMD Phenom II 965

£184

Just a couple of notes:

  • The Intel CPU is much more powerful, however most people won't use it so the AMD CPU is probably sufficient
  • If you go for an AMD CPU/Motherboard make sure you get a 900-series chipset as these *should* be compatible with the Bulldozer chips that are coming out 'soon'

I seem to recall you had about a £500 budget? if so go for the AMD CPU/Motherboard and the 6870 Hawk, that should work out at a little over budget but it'll give you great performance for the money.

If you can stretch you money a little more, get the 560Ti which should end up costing you ~£550

If you really want a great CPU, go for the Intel option :D

Probably some shit I've forgotten but yeah, I didn't include peripherals such as screens/keyboards/mice as they're things that often depend on the person

Hey Starz, long time no see!

It's great to hear you're still playing, I'm guessing that means your eyesight is pretty good at the moment?  If you give Abs or Rachel a PM you should be able to get your emeritus rank back (if you want it) :)

Assuming you're certain that it's hardware then I would suggest a nice external monitor, there's a wide variety of 1080p monitors available in the $120-200 range (Canadian Dollars obviously).

Does the white line show up straight away when you start up the laptop (ie. before windows has started, normally it's a black screen with white writing)?

If you're not certain that it's a hardware issue I would suggest updating your VGA Drivers, depending on your laptop you will either have to get them from the laptop maker (Eg. HP/Dell/Asus) or the Video Card Maker (nVidia, AMD or Intel).
