I did the easy version on the day of release, and then tried hard yesterday. I got combo'd like a boss on wave 7 and died
I would definitely say hard is more fun (albeit a bit slower), but wave 7 is a pain in the arse and you can get roflstomped quite easily if you're not careful.

The LG Cookie runs Java ME apps and therefore jmIRC *should* work. If it isn't, it's unlikely any of the other Java ME based IRC programs would work either (most of them are derivatives of jmIRC, or haven't been updated in 6 years).
Nonetheless, you may want to try jmIRC-m, but the likelihood is it won't work:

There's rumours that these auras will have combat bonuses, although I don't know whether there's any truth in that (I would hope not).
