I read a post on the forums where Americans were playing on foreign servers and experienced virtually no difference.
They only did it to avoid traffic and overflow zones. I imagine the effect works in reverse :p

Then I read the FAQ and it said

Yes. You can change your home world. There will be a limit of one such transfer every seven days per account; each transfer will cost 1,800 gems. After a transfer, all existing and future characters on your account will play in the new world.

which is £29!

I might try changing to Darkhaven and see If I can do it for free
edit: officially switched to Darkhaven for free
