Towards the very beginning of this semester, you were asked to consider a major theme
of twentieth-century composition. This theme was articulated as follows: In the twentieth
century, with the break-down of the tonal system and many of the forms that are associated with
common-practice tonality, composers seek out new ways to organize their music.
The time is coming for you to show that you understand this theme and can relate it to
some of the repertoire we have examined this semester. As part of your Final Exam, you will be
required to write a paper on this theme. The paper will be due at the start of the scheduled final
exam time: Wednesday, May 13 at 8:00 AM.
Your paper can either take a broad view—looking at a few works—or take a more indepth
view at a single piece. I suspect that the latter approach will be more successful.

Krippner also claims that government turned to finance to avoid addressing problems of distributional conflict and scarce resources in the economy. In the context of the United States, perhaps this is true. However, Indonesia was still a developing nation, and did not experience the prosperity of the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Regardless, it can be agreed that financialization in Indonesia also occurred inadvertently as a result of the government trying to solve the financial crisis. The IMF programs helped and restored stability, but Kindleberger would claim that a lender of last resort is needed to prevent future crises.
Klein also claims that government and corporations often use shock as a tool to transfer wealth from the public to the private. She also states that the privatization and deregulation of the economy leads to an increasing gap between the wealthy and the poor. However, in the case of Indonesia, the President resigned over this crisis. In addition, before the crisis the government was already riddled with corruption and crony capitalism. The Asian Financial Crisis actually inhibited these flaws of the Indonesian economy, and brought in the IMF to rescue the economy and promote prosperity.
