The World's Greatest Pancakes
When we were young, we crawled until
Our knees grated on the tarmac
And then we stood, and still welcome
The hardened souls and soles and shoes
At risings of the Northern road
A glance back is affordable
To bloodstains and footprints in sand
And all else which came in between
Yet all discomfort which endures
Is cured by the waitress's smile
She serves them with home-made syrup
We've never loved each other more
If I return the morn, she knows
The question is a bitter spice
Had it been me, nailed to that cross
I would look neither down nor up
