Reducing Lagg on RS

Basically what you're going to do is allocate more RAM to Java which will let your RS run smoother.

First thing you should do is download the official rs client from http://www.runescape.com/kbase/guid/Downloads_and_Wallpapers

After installing, hit start and search for 'runescape.prm' , this should only give 1 result (http://puu.sh/7WZk)

Open the file with notepad, you should get this:

http://puu.sh/7WZN

Now what you want to do is change the '128' in the 2nd line from the bottom to a higher number; this is the MB of RAM allocated to Runescape on your pc. I personally advise not allocating more than 1/3rd of your total RAM if you have 2GB+ RAM, or not more than 1/4th if you have below 2GB. I personally use 1gb out of 4 for RS and my scape runs perfectly smooth on maxed settings (with 1 second loading screens).

Assuming 1 gb, change the 128 to 1024 giving this:

http://puu.sh/7X0V

Save the file, close it, and re-load the official rs client.

Enjoy smooth scaping.

To strive.
To seek.
To find.
And not to yield.

hah, my new comp runs fine on rs, but this helped my older one  :D thanks.

cody

Do I save it as runescape.prm and have it open with notepad or do i have to have it open with the compressor?

Al

what happens if you allocate more RAM onto runescape? like in james 00's example he has 6, what would happen if he used 5?

Believe it or not, your computer actually requires RAM to run the operating system. If you happen to allocate to much RAM onto RS, the computer won't have enough RAM to function properly.

Also, usually RS shouldn't take up a huge amount of RAM to begin with, so allocating 2GB would really be the most anyone should use.

Note: I'm not a computer expert, but im working to be one!

this really only applies if you are getting lots of lag using swiftkit or a normal browser. I'd stick to swiftkit unless it's making you lag.

You want to give it more RAM to reduce lag, not less. You could go up to your computers limit but as the guide says, going up to 1/3 or 1/4 of your limit is better.

That wasn't the question, Derp. He wanted to know, what is the lowest RAM runescape needed to run so that he could run "lag free not runescape stuff" while he's afking. From what I can tell, runescape allocates 128MB of Ram to the game. I don't think it would be wise to drop it any lower then that, since it was runescape that set it in the first place. You could always experiment and see if it runs at a lower setting, but I would just keep it that way.

It also depends on what your non runescape stuff is as well, you might have to allocate more RAM to respectful places depending on that.

i was wondering because sometimes i have to use a slow computer. i mean really slow. like it can barely have rs, the irc and reddit open at once.

Try this: http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
and this: http://www.combofix.org/

They should both do a little bit to speed your computer up. What are the specs on your machine? Also, I think the lowest I'd go is 64MB if I were you. Then again, I doubt some experimental values would hurt anything so you could try even lower, but RS might have some sort of override if it finds it doesn't have nearly enough to use.
NYEK NYEK NYEK.

This Babylon

army, thanks for this guide dude. did this today before the war and had no lag at all. was piled and actually managed to tank for more than 2 seconds!  :>

Cannon1993

This is a good little guide to help runescape use more of your resources, however i would like to point out that since the runescape client is 32 bit, allocating more than 1600mb will cause errors, in my experience the client won't even open.

For anyone who was thinking of allocating about half their ram that has 4gb+

Blackout0103

:woeh: Thanks for this! I did as you suggested and allocated 1GB of my 4GB DDR3 memory and Runescape is running quite smoothly now. Many thanks for the advice! :)
