Classic Clan Campaign

From Wilderness Guardians
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Classic Clan Campaign was a movement conceived in late 2007 where WG made an effort to preserve historical aspects of the clan world which were being phased out, in particular the tradition of hosting non-returning wars as opposed to PK run-ins which could last for hours. While the clan world itself continued to evolve and PKRIs became the standard type of engagement, WG continues to avoid extended run-ins. The clan also enjoys occasionally reinacting historical traditions such as marching up from Edgeville into the Wilderness and organising fights where more recent in-game items are disallowed.

2007 Event

The Drop Party at the Falador Party Room

In an effort to raise awareness regarding the decline of the traditional non-returning war, WG organised a promotional event in late October 2007. The event was open to the public and announced on several fansites, with multiple clans such as The Gladiatorz also being given invitations via their forums.

The event took place on 10 November 2007 and hundreds of players were in attendance. It took place mainly in Falador and consisted of five activities:

  • Games in the Burthope Games Room (unannounced to the public).
  • A public speech about the campaign.
  • A drop party at the Falador party room.
  • A "firefest" where the clan lit hundreds of fires.
  • A "flower power" event where the clan planted hundreds of flowers using Mithril seeds.

In late 2010 WG hosted a series of "old-school" wars (in RuneScape 2; not to be confused with wars in Old-School RuneScape which at the time was unreleased). These battles involved gear restrictions on almost all items released after 2005. Popular items which were disallowed were Helms of Neitiznot, Team Capes and Rune Crossbows. However a unique aspect of the fights were that they all took place in unusual locations around RuneScape in PvP worlds, rather than the traditional location of deep Wilderness.

WG vs The Gladiatorz

The first and arguably most successful war was against The Gladiatorz (Gladz) and took place in the Stronghold of Player Safety. The clans agreed on a P2P knock-out with single spells and pre-2005 restrictions.

The war occured on 10 October 2010. WG massed 41 members at Oo'glog in order to gain the stat bonuses from the pools and a pre-war speech was given by His Lordship. The clan made its way to Edgeville and led into the Stronghold of Security by Vio using an alternate account (WG Unite) which was unattackable. WG greeted Gladz who had massed approximately 26 members and wished them good luck.

WG took up a defensive position in a death dot (DD) in the centre of the Stronghold and were charged by Gladz, commencing the battle. The fighting spread all throughout the stronghold but WG's numbers kept them in the lead for the entirety of the engagement. Within a few minutes Gladz had been cleared entirely from the battlefield.

WG took an ending of approximately 35 members remaining and congratulated Gladz on a clean and respectable fight. A video of the fight was made by Vio and includes His Lordship's pre-war speech.

WG vs Australian Army

WG and Australian Army battle in the Varrock Sewers, 16 October 2010.

The second fight took place the following week and was organised with the country clan Australian Army (AA). AA intially agreed to the same rules and the fight took place at the very end of the Varrock Sewers.

The war occured on 16 October 2010. WG was the attacking clan and charged AA who were defending from a death dot. However it soon became clear that AA were not abiding by the pre-2005 gear rules and had brought helms of Neitiznots and were using ancient curses. Several AA members also brought a ring of life to teleport out with and at least one broke the boundaries and ran out of the designated war zone.

Despite the cheating, WG managed to clear AA from the battlefield and sustained very few casualties. A video of the fight was again produced by Vio.

WG vs Oblivion

A third war was scheduled against a team called Oblivion (not related to either the clan Rs Oblivion which existed during the same era, or the better known Oblivion PvM) following the same theme of a P2P knock-out with single spells and pre-2005 gear. The fight was organised for atop the Al Kharid Palace.

The war occured on 23 October 2010. Unfortunately the war ended in a defeat for WG for the first time. Oblivion arrived with more numbers and higher levels than WG, and had requested a change to the usual terms of war which allowed Ancient Curses - giving them a significant advantage with their higher prayer levels.

WG victory (Tyranny)

Due to the considerable success of the first two fights, WG attempted to organise more in a more traditional style in the following years.

WG vs Thirteen

An old-school war was held against Thirteen (13) on 15 June 2012, which took place at the Water Maze in deep Wilderness. 13 violated the terms in various ways, including bringing super energy potions and returning after death, and the war was not as successful as WG had hoped. A video of the war was produced by Vio.

WG vs Tyranny

In August 2012, Vio organised a 2004-style fight against Tyranny. The fight was designated a "megawar", and preparations for the fight included a dedicated forum section, graphics such as banners and signatures done in a 2004 style, and a fifteen-minute war preparation video made by Vio.

The war against Tyranny took place on 26 August 2012, at the Bandit Camp in shallow Wilderness. The location was chosen by Vio as he had fought in a memorable war between the Cutthroat Syndicate (cXs) and Lethal Blades at the same location in late 2007, five years previously. WG massed for the fight in Juliet's House and marched to the Monastery as per tradition. The fight was relatively easy for WG, as they had brought around 14 players against Tyranny's 6. Despite the low numbers, Tyranny fought honourably and the fight was considered a success. Vio dedicated the battle to cXs, and produced a video for the fight which was done in a similar style to that of WG vs Dead on Arrival.
